Vote prevents teacher layoffs that were never going to happen
    By: David Freddoso

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., explained her vote for the $26.1 billion state bailout by arguing that there were “3,000 teachers in Washington State who are right now in limbo.”

    But no, there weren’t.

A survey of districts conducted by the state Professional Educators Standards Board found that just 445 teachers statewide received reduction-in-force letters last spring. Since then, many, if not most, have been recalled for the approaching school year. In Sumner, for example, 16 RIF letters were sent out. All but one have been rescinded.”

And you know what? They still have to cut the state’s budget.

We’ve already seen it in Arkansas and a few other states, so this comes as no surprise. All of those teachers facing layoffs — they were never facing layoffs. They became classic state budgetary rhetorical devices in a game normally used to raise taxes. You can’t wring tax increases out of voters or give your congressional delegation cover for a union bailout if you tell them the truth — that there are 1,000 things you can cut before you start laying off teachers and firefighters or releasing violent inmates.

Meeting Turns Into Battle Over New Black Panthers Case

    Read more: http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/08/13/meeting-turns-battle-over-new-black-panthers-case#ixzz0wXDzdbmA

A regularly scheduled “business meeting” of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on Friday turned into a fiery shout fest — finger-pointing and all — over whether the Justice Department was “stonewalling” their investigation into a controversial voting rights case, whether that investigation has been fruitful, and whether the commission can even fulfill its mission anymore.

For more than a year, the commission has been looking into why the Obama administration reversed course on a federal lawsuit against two members of the New Black Panther Party, who were videotaped outside a Philadelphia polling station on Election Day 2008. The two were dressed in military-style uniforms, and one was holding a nightstick. The issue escalated in June when a former Justice Department attorney alleged it was all part of an Obama administration policy to avoid prosecuting minorities, an allegation the Justice Department has strongly denied.

The former Justice Department attorney, J. Christian Adams, has said that Christopher Coates, head of the Voting Rights section at the time, could corroborate his allegations. But the Justice Department has blocked Coates from complying with a subpoena for his testimony.

An Independent member of the commission, Todd Gaziano, said “stonewalling of the Justice Department” means the commission “won’t be able to make findings of facts,” but members from both sides of the aisle agreed the investigation has uncovered a “larger issue” over whether the law allows the commission to take the Justice Department to court to enforce subpoenas.

“Are we an independent commission with the ability to make a determination as to what we deem to be relevant and important information that we want to review,” Republican commissioner Ashley Taylor asked, “or are we a commission that can ask a question and when rebuffed must go away?”

Democrat Michael Yaki, though, said questions about the commission’s authority and relevance go even further, when what is supposed to be an “independent” and “bipartisan” commission looking at civil rights issues across the country has “spent over a year and a half obssessing about whether or not there is some sort of kabal, conspiracy, culture at” the Justice Department and done “very little about what is going on in the outside world.”

At one point, Gaziano interrupted Yaki, prompting Yaki to point his finger at Gaziano and say sternly, “If you would just stop interrupting me!” Gaziano then pleaded with Yaki to “stop bloviating.”

The chairman of the commission, Republican Gerald Reynolds, jumped in, telling Yaki, “You have mud on your hands … because you escalated it” unnecessarily. “Please show some discipline,” he implored.

During the one-hour discussion about the New Black Panthers case investigation, commissioners erupted into shouting over each other at least six times. One such episode lasted a full minute, with Reynolds interrupting to say, “I will not have this useless exchange.”

In fact, Reynolds suggested at one point, the entire debate over Adams’ allegations could be brought to an end if Coates would testify.

“The simplest thing in the world to do for the Department of Justice, in terms of putting this to bed, is to turn to Mr. Coates and instruct him to go testify,” Reynolds said. “He will either refute the statements made by Mr. Adams on this point, or he will confirm them.”

Gaziano agreed, saying commissioners “have sworn testimony” from Adams, “and the Department has still neither admitted, denied or commented on that statement.”

But Yaki said suggestions that Adams’ “sworn testimony” amounts to evidence are “a farce” and “a joke,” calling Adams’ testimony “not credible to say the least.”

“There was sworn testimony by one individual, who’s no longer an employee, about a statement by another individual who said he heard it from a third individual,” Yaki said.

In a letter sent to the commission on Wednesday, Perez, who testified before the commission in May, said the Justice Department “is firmly committed to the evenhanded application of the law, without regard to the race of the victims or perpetrators of unlawful behavior.”

“Any suggestion to the contrary is simply untrue,” Perez wrote, pointing to “our ongoing work in Mississippi,” where the Justice Department recently filed a motion to stop Democratic officials from discriminating against white voters.

Commissioner Peter Kirsanow, a Republican, said Perez’s letter “gave us the back of the hand,” and Gaziano said Perez “continues to refuse to allow Chris Coates to testify when it’s clear that he would have relevant and material evidence to present.”

But Yaki insisted that the letter offers “proof” that “all this blowing smoke is just that.”

“It shows actual actions by the Department of Justice that completely bely the claims made by [Adams],” he said. “The letter states very clearly that … [when an] African-American was doing all these pretty awful things to suppress the white vote, the Department of Justice got involved.”

In addition, Abigail Thernstrom, the Republican Vice-Chair of the commission who has been an outspoken critic of the New Black Panther case investigation, said there “can be perfectly legitimate internal reasons” for the Justice Department’s refusal to comply with the commission’s subpoena.

“If Republicans were running the Justice Department, I think that for reasons of internal management to the department they would undoubtedly handle this in the same way that Perez is,” Thernstrom said. “It seems to me we’re talking about how Washington works. … We are not uniquely victimized here.”

Gaziano called that a “strange notion” disputed by history, and he offered a motion urging Congress to amend the law creating the commission or write new laws to clarify what can be done if the Justice Department has a “conflict of interest.” The motion passed by a vote of 5 to 3.

The commission is currently working on a report about its investigation into the New Black Panthers case.

A month after the Justice Department won a default judgment against the two defendants in April 2009, the Justice Department filed a motion to dismiss charges against one of the men, saying a lack of sufficient evidence meant the case against him wouldn’t stand up in court. The Justice Department successfully pursued an injunction against the man seen holding a nightstick. That injunction bars him from visiting a polling station in Philadelphia for the next two years.

Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic center
    By the CNN Wire Staff
    August 13, 2010 9:04 p.m. EDT

    ANYONE SURPRISED?

    *******************************************************************

Washington (CNN) — President Obama threw his support behind a controversial proposal to build an Islamic center and mosque near New York’s ground zero, saying Friday that “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,” according to remarks distributed by the White House.

“Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,” Obama said, according to prepared remarks released before a speech.

“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said.

Obama was speaking at a White House Iftar dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The president’s remarks drew praise from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced his support for the Islamic center last week.

Bloomberg compared Obama’s speech to a letter President George Washington wrote in support of a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island. “President Obama’s words tonight evoked President Washington’s own August reminder that ‘all possess alike liberty,’ ” Bloomberg said in a statement.

“I applaud President Obama’s clarion defense of the freedom of religion tonight,” he said.

The president invoked the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which critics of the Islamic center cite as the main reason for preventing its construction.

“We must all recognize and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan,” Obama said, according to his prepared remarks. “The 9/11 attacks were a deeply traumatic event for our country.”

“The pain and suffering experienced by those who lost loved ones is unimaginable,” he continued. “So I understand the emotions that this issue engenders. Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground.”

But Obama argued that American ideals and the Constitution demanded that the project proceed.

“This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable,” he said. “The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure.”

The proposed Islamic center has provoked vocal opposition from some families of 9/11 victims and other groups. Nearly 70 percent of Americans oppose the plan, according to CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Wednesday.

The project’s leaders say they plan to build the $100 million, 13-story facility called Cordoba House three blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks. The developer, Sharif El-Gamal, describes the project as an “Islamic community center” that will include a 500-seat performing arts center, a lecture hall, a swimming pool, a gym, a culinary school, a restaurant and a prayer space for Muslims.

On Wednesday, the project’s developers declined an offer by New York Gov. David Paterson to relocate the project to a state-owned site.

Earlier this month, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously denied landmark status for the building where the proposed Islamic center would stand, allowing the project to move forward.

Obama Comes Out in Favor of Allowing Mosque Near Ground Zero

    Published August 13, 2010

    | Associated Press

    WASHINGTON
    — President Barack Obama on Friday forcefully endorsed building a mosque near ground zero, saying the country’s founding principles demanded no less.

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,” Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.

“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”

Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Republicans were quick to pounce on the president’s remarks.

“President Obama is wrong,” said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. “It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero. While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque they are abusing that right by needlessly offending so many people who have suffered so much.”

The White House had not previously taken a stand on the mosque, which would be part of a $100 million Islamic center to be built two blocks from where nearly 3,000 people perished when hijacked jetliners slammed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Press secretary Robert Gibbs had insisted it was a local matter.

It was already much more than that, sparking debate around the country as top Republicans including Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich announced their opposition. So did the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights group.

Obama elevated it to a presidential issue Friday without equivocation.

While insisting that the place where the twin towers once stood was indeed “hallowed ground,” Obama said that the proper way to honor it was to apply American values

“Our capacity to show not merely tolerance, but respect to those who are different from us — a way of life that stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of those who attacked us on that September morning, and who continue to plot against us today,” he said.

Entering the highly charged election-year debate, Obama surely knew that his words would not only make headlines but be heard by Muslims worldwide. The president has made it a point to reach out to the global Muslim community, and guests at Friday’s dinner included ambassadors and officials from numerous Muslim nations, including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

While his pronouncement concerning the mosque might find favor in the Muslim world, Obama’s stance runs counter to the opinions of the majority of Americans, according to polls. A CNN/Opinion Research poll released this week found that nearly 70 percent of Americans opposed the mosque plan while just 29 percent approved.

A number of Democratic politicians have shied away from the controversy. New York’s mayor, independent Michael Bloomberg, has been a strong supporter of the mosque, which has won approval from local planning boards.

The group behind the $100 million project, the Cordoba Initiative, describes it as a Muslim-themed community center. Early plans call not only for prayer space but for a swimming pool, culinary school, art studios and other features. Developers envision it as a hub for interfaith interaction, as well as a place for Muslims to bridge some of their faith’s own schisms.

Opponents, including some Sept. 11 victims’ relatives, see the prospect of a mosque so near the destroyed trade center as an insult to the memory of those killed by Islamic terrorists in the 2001 attacks. Some of the Sept. 11 victims’ relatives, however, are in favor.

Mean while back at the White House we will be seeing Obama poll numbers continue slide even further into the swamp. Eventually the only way to see his approval ratings will be when Nancy gets done draining the swamp.

President Obama, where was your speech on the National Day of Prayer?

Oh, um, and where were you on Christmas?

President Obama, unlike you, I learned all I need to know about the Muslim Religion on 9/11/2001.

Obama making the ground zero mosque a presidential support issue shows just how insane he really is. He should have kept his mouth shut… too late. We will use it to excoriate him even more.

Mark my words. And Obama doesn’t care… but he should.

    Good morning Patriot VF!

I’m out the door for a good 4 hours.

HR 1586 is an all around bad bill. If your state takes the money to “keep teachers working” (wink wink nudge nudge), 1) it’s a one time government supplemental, b) which means you HAVE to pay the rest, and 3) you must pay the teachers unions in perpetuity without the help of the feds again.

If your state in in debt, guess what?

Thus far in his Presidency, Obama has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is in opposition to the will of the American People. It can now be clearly stated that this President is Anti-American in all he says and what little he actually does.

  32. VotingFemale says:

Sam, Obama was a member of the “New Party” which is a Socialist front for Communists. The New Party tried and failed to institute” FUSION” which would add New Party votes to the Democrat Party votes in an election.

That would be like adding Libertarian Party votes to Republican party votes for a total count of a single primary candidate… a low ball way to short circuit a single party primary election opponent.

Socialist FUSION was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, thus the New Party fell apart.

Obama chose to associate himself with these shadow communists to gain more political power.

Realizing that if he openly declared himself a communist he would not reach political prominence, Obama chose to “associate.”

The man is a Communist and his actions prove it.

  33. VotingFemale says:

    Socialist = Communist

Look at the list above to see how many congressmen are declared Socialist/Communists…

Barny Frank , Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangel, Henry Waxman, Jesse Jackson Jr, Shelia Jackson-Lee… just to name a few.

No doubt in my mind that Barbara Boxer is also a Communist but too savvy to openly join the Socialist (Communist) Party

  34. samiam60 says:

This is the first I am hearing of this VF. It all makes perfect sense and one can now see clearly that this President is out to destroy all that is America.

McCarthy was on the right track but fell victim to the DEM spin machine… who painted him as a zelot. They have tried to do that to Palin but she is too smart for them. That is why their hatred is so totally consuming.

Political Correctness is an invention of the Far Left… and they used it to their full advantage.

Calling the President a Communist is painted by the Socialists(Communists) in the Left Stream Communist controlled Media as being extremist behavior… a political correct defensive move… and is why I persist in throwing the Communist-word often… to desensitize folks who fear using it.
I did the same thing with the Socialist word as did many others… and now it is accepted practice to use it without fear of being non-PC..

Do not fear using the Communist word to correctly label a Communist.

The Professional Left helped him get elected… now he needs them to STFU and I doubt they will take that sitting down. I expect them to out him as a card carrying member within their ranks when all their hope is gone. Sarah was unafraid to call it like it really is.

    from the United Kingdom: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100050412/the-stunning-decline-of-barack-obama-10-key-reasons-why-the-obama-presidency-is-in-meltdown/

The last few weeks have been a nightmare for President Obama, in a summer of discontent in the United States which has deeply unsettled the ruling liberal elites, so much so that even the Left has begun to turn against the White House. While the anti-establishment Tea Party movement has gained significant ground and is now a rising and powerful political force to be reckoned with, many of the president’s own supporters as well as independents are rapidly losing faith in Barack Obama, with open warfare breaking out between the White House and the left-wing of the Democratic Party. While conservatism in America grows stronger by the day, the forces of liberalism are growing increasingly weaker and divided.

Against this backdrop, the president’s approval ratings have been sliding dramatically all summer, with the latest Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll of US voters dropping to minus 22 points, the lowest point so far for Barack Obama since taking office. While just 24 per cent of American voters strongly approve of the president’s job performance, almost twice that number, 46 per cent, strongly disapprove. According to Rasmussen, 65 per cent of voters believe the United States is going down the wrong track, including 70 per cent of independents.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls now has President Obama at over 50 per cent disapproval, a remarkably high figure for a president just 18 months into his first term. Strikingly, the latest USA Today/Gallup survey has the President on just 41 per cent approval, with 53 per cent disapproving.

Related link: The Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime

There are an array of reasons behind the stunning decline and political fall of President Obama, chief among them fears over the current state of the US economy, with widespread concern over high levels of unemployment, the unstable housing market, and above all the towering budget deficit. Americans are increasingly rejecting President Obama’s big government solutions to America’s economic woes, which many fear will lead to the United States sharing the same fate as Greece.

Growing disillusionment with the Obama administration’s handling of the economy as well as health care and immigration has gone hand in hand with mounting unhappiness with the President’s aloof and imperial style of leadership, and a growing perception that he is out of touch with ordinary Americans, especially at a time of significant economic pain. Barack Obama’s striking absence of natural leadership ability (and blatant lack of experience) has played a big part in undermining his credibility with the US public, with his lacklustre handling of the Gulf oil spill coming under particularly intense fire.

On the national security and foreign policy front, President Obama has not fared any better. His leadership on the war in Afghanistan has been confused and at times lacking in conviction, and seemingly dictated by domestic political priorities rather than military and strategic goals. His overall foreign policy has been an appalling mess, with his flawed strategy of engagement of hostile regimes spectacularly backfiring. And as for the War on Terror, his administration has not even acknowledged it is fighting one.

Can it get any worse for President Obama? Undoubtedly yes. Here are 10 key reasons why the Obama presidency is in serious trouble, and why its prospects are unlikely to improve between now and the November mid-terms.

    1. The Obama presidency is out of touch with the American people

In a previous post I noted how the Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime, extravagant, decaying and out of touch with ordinary Americans. The First Lady’s ill-conceived trip to Spain at a time of widespread economic hardship was symbolic of a White House that barely gives a second thought to public opinion on many issues, and frequently projects a distinctly elitist image. The “let them eat cake” approach didn’t play well over two centuries ago, and it won’t succeed today.

    2. Most Americans don’t have confidence in the president’s leadership

This deficit of trust in Obama’s leadership is central to his decline. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, “nearly six in ten voters say they lack faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country”, and two thirds “say they are disillusioned with or angry about the way the federal government is working.” The poll showed that a staggering 58 per cent of Americans say they do not have confidence in the president’s decision-making, with just 42 per cent saying they do.

    3. Obama fails to inspire

In contrast to the soaring rhetoric of his 2004 Convention speech in Boston which succeeded in impressing millions of television viewers at the time, America is no longer inspired by Barack Obama’s flat, monotonous and often dull presidential speeches and statements delivered via teleprompter. From his extraordinarily uninspiring Afghanistan speech at West Point to his flat State of the Union address, President Obama has failed to touch the heart of America. Even Jimmy Carter was more moving.

    4. The United States is drowning in debt

The Congressional Budget Office Long-Term Budget Outlook offers a frightening picture of the scale of America’s national debt. Under its alternative fiscal scenario, the CBO projects that US debt could rise to 87 percent of GDP by 2020, 109 percent by 2025, and 185 percent in 2035. While much of Europe, led by Britain and Germany, are aggressively cutting their deficits, the Obama administration is actively growing America’s debt, and has no plan in place to avert a looming Greek-style financial crisis.

    5. Obama’s Big Government message is falling flat

The relentless emphasis on bailouts and stimulus spending has done little to spur economic growth or create jobs, but has greatly advanced the power of the federal government in America. This is not an approach that is proving popular with the American public, and even most European governments have long ditched this tax and spend approach to saving their own economies.

    6. Obama’s support for socialised health care is a huge political mistake

In an extraordinary act of political Harakiri, President Obama leant his full support to the hugely controversial, unpopular and divisive health care reform bill, with a monstrous price tag of $940 billion, whose repeal is now supported by 55 per cent of likely US voters. As I wrote at the time of its passing, the legislation is “a great leap forward by the United States towards a European-style vision of universal health care, which will only lead to soaring costs, higher taxes, and a surge in red tape for small businesses. This reckless legislation dramatically expands the power of the state over the lives of individuals, and could not be further from the vision of America’s founding fathers.”

    7. Obama’s handling of the Gulf oil spill has been weak-kneed and indecisive

While much of the spilled oil in the Gulf has now been thankfully cleared up, the political damage for the White House will be long-lasting. Instead of showing real leadership on the matter by acing decisively and drawing upon offers of international support, the Obama administration settled on a more convenient strategy of relentlessly bashing an Anglo-American company while largely sitting on its hands. Significantly, a poll of Louisiana voters gave George W. Bush higher marks for his handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with 62 percent disapproving of Obama’s performance on the Gulf oil spill.

    8. US foreign policy is an embarrassing mess under the Obama administration

It is hard to think of a single foreign policy success for the Obama administration, but there have been plenty of missteps which have weakened American global power as well as the standing of the United States. The surrender to Moscow on Third Site missile defence, the failure to aggressively stand up to Iran’s nuclear programme, the decision to side with ousted Marxists in Honduras, the slap in the face for Great Britain over the Falklands, have all contributed to the image of a US administration completely out of its depth in international affairs. The Obama administration’s high risk strategy of appeasing America’s enemies while kicking traditional US allies has only succeeded in weakening the United States while strengthening her adversaries.

    9. President Obama is muddled and confused on national security

From the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to the War on Terror, President Obama’s leadership has often been muddled and confused. On Afghanistan he rightly sent tens of thousands of additional troops to the battlefield. At the same time however he bizarrely announced a timetable for the withdrawal of US forces beginning in July 2011, handing the initiative to the Taliban. On Iraq he has announced an end to combat operations and the withdrawal of all but 50,000 troops despite a recent upsurge in terrorist violence and political instability, and without the Iraqi military and police ready to take over. In addition he has ditched the concept of a War on Terror, replacing it with an Overseas Contingency Operation, hardly the right message to send in the midst of a long-war against Al-Qaeda.

    10. Obama doesn’t believe in American greatness

Barack Obama has made it clear that he doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism, and has made apologising for his country into an art form. In a speech to the United Nations last September he stated that “no one nation can or should try to dominate another nation. No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed. No balance of power among nations will hold.” It is difficult to see how a US president who holds these views and does not even accept America’s greatness in history can actually lead the world’s only superpower with force and conviction.

There is a distinctly Titanic-like feel to the Obama presidency and it’s not hard to see why. The most left-wing president in modern American history has tried to force a highly interventionist, government-driven agenda that runs counter to the principles of free enterprise, individual freedom, and limited government that have made the United States the greatest power in the world, and the freest nation on earth.

This, combined with weak leadership both at home and abroad against the backdrop of tremendous economic uncertainty in an increasingly dangerous world, has contributed to a spectacular political collapse for a president once thought to be invincible. America at its core remains a deeply conservative nation, which cherishes its traditions and founding principles. President Obama is increasingly out of step with the American people, by advancing policies that undermine the United States as a global power, while undercutting America’s deep-seated love for freedom.
