Study links sugary soft drinks to pancreas cancer
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer, an unusual but deadly cancer, researchers reported on Monday.
People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk, the study of 60,000 people in Singapore found.
Sugar may be to blame but people who drink sweetened sodas regularly often have other poor health habits, said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota, who led the study.
Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, Pereira and colleagues said they followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years.
Over that time, 140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer.

hey lisa, yeah I see that. no doubt the mom is a tough gal. It sounds like she had a rough pregnancy. I just saw a movie about an arts movement in the 90’s. One of the drivers and inspirations was a woman who got pregnant and then got cancer and was told that having the baby would endanger her own life. She refused to abort, gave birth and died two weeks later. I think she and her child can be an inspiration to us all. Of course if the kid turned into an addict or something it would hard to be inspired by that.

The United Nations panel on climate change is facing fresh criticism today as The Sunday Telegraph reveals new factual errors and poor sources of evidence in its influential report to government leaders.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report is supposed to be the world’s most authoritative scientific account of the scale of global warming.
But this paper has discovered a series of new flaws in it including:
They are the latest in a series of damaging revelations about the IPCC’s most recent report, published in 2007.
Last month, the panel was forced to issue a humiliating retraction after it emerged statements about the melting of Himalayan glaciers were inaccurate.
Last weekend, this paper revealed that the panel had based claims about disappearing mountain ice on anecdotal evidence in a student’s dissertation and an article in a mountaineering magazine.
And on Friday, it emerged that the IPCC’s panel had wrongly reported that more than half of the Netherlands was below sea level because it had failed to check information supplied by a Dutch government agency.
Researchers insist the errors are minor and do not impact on the overall conclusions about climate change.
However, senior scientists are now expressing concern at the way the IPCC compiles its reports and have hit out at the panel’s use of so-called “grey literature” — evidence from sources that have not been subjected to scientific scrutiny.
A new poll has revealed that public belief in climate change is weakening.The panel’s controversial chair, Rajendra Pachauri, pictured right, is facing pressure to resign over the affair.
The IPCC attempted to counter growing criticism by releasing a statement insisting that authors who contribute to its 3,000-page report are required to “critically assess and review the quality and validity of each source” when they use material from unpublished or non-peer-reviewed sources. Drafts of the reports are checked by scientific reviewers before they are subjected to line-by-line approval by the 130 member countries of the IPCC.
Despite these checks, a diagram used to demonstrate the potential for generating electricity from wave power has been found to contain numerous errors.
The source of information for the diagram was cited as the website of UK-based wave-energy company Wavegen. Yet the diagram on Wavegen’s website contains dramatically different figures for energy potential off Britain and Alaska and in the Bering Sea.
When contacted by The Sunday Telegraph, Wavegen insisted that the diagram on its website had not been changed. It added that it was not the original source of the data and had simply reproduced it on its website.
The diagram is widely cited in other literature as having come from a paper on wave energy produced by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 1991 along with data from the European Directory of Renewable Energy.
Experts claim that, had the IPCC checked the citation properly, it would have spotted the discrepancies.
It can also be revealed that claims made by the IPCC about the effects of global warming, and suggestions about ways it could be avoided, were partly based on information from ten dissertations by Masters students.
One unpublished dissertation was used to support the claim that sea-level rise could impact on people living in the Nile delta and other African coastal areas, although the main focus of the thesis, by a student at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, appears to have been the impact of computer software on environmental development.
The IPCC also made use of a report by US conservation group Defenders of Wildlife to state that salmon in US streams have been affected by rising temperatures. The panel has already come under fire for using information in reports by conservation charity the WWF.
Estimates of carbon-dioxide emissions from nuclear power stations and claims that suggested they were cheaper than coal or gas power stations were also taken from the website of the World Nuclear Association, rather than using independent scientific calculations.
Such revelations are creating growing public confusion over climate change. A poll by Ipsos on behalf of environmental consultancy firm Euro RSCG revealed that the proportion of the public who believe in the reality of climate change has dropped from 44 per cent to 31per cent in the past year.
The proportion of people who believe that climate change is a bit over-exaggerated rose from 22 per cent to 31per cent.
Climate scientists have expressed frustration with the IPCC’s use of unreliable evidence.
Alan Thorpe, chief executive of the Natural Environment Research Council, the biggest funder of climate science in the UK, said: “We should only be dealing with peer-reviewed literature. We open ourselves up to trouble if we start getting into hearsay and grey literature. We have enough research that has been peer-reviewed to provide evidence for climate change, so it is concerning that the IPCC has strayed from that.”
Professor Bob Watson, who chaired the IPCC before Dr Pachauri and is now chief scientist at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, insisted that despite the errors there was little doubt that human-induced climate change was a reality.
But he called for changes in the way the IPCC compiles future reports.
“It is concerning that these mistakes have appeared in the IPCC report, but there is no doubt the earth’s climate is changing and the only way we can explain those changes is primarily human activity,” he said.
Mr Watson said that Dr Pachauri “cannot be personally blamed for one or two incorrect sentences in the IPCC report”, but stressed that the chairman must take responsibility for correcting errors.
Another row over the IPCC report emerged last night after Professor Roger Pielke Jnr, from Colorado University’s Centre for Science and Technology Policy Research, claimed its authors deliberately ignored a paper he wrote that contradicted the panel’s claims about the cost of climate-related natural disasters.
A document included a statement from an anonymous IPCC author saying that they believed Dr Pielke had changed his mind on the matter, when he had not.

Planned Parenthood Pushes Intensive Sex Education for Kids as Young as 10
A new report by the International Planned Parenthood Federation is advocating that children as young as 10 be given extensive sex education, including an awareness of sex’s pleasures.
The report, “Stand and Deliver,” charges that religious groups, specifically Catholics and Muslims, deny their young access to comprehensive sexual programs and education.
“Young people’s sexuality is still contentious for many religious institutions. Fundamentalist and other religious groups — the Catholic Church and madrasas (Islamic Schools) for example — have imposed tremendous barriers that prevent young people, particularly, from obtaining information and services related to sex and reproduction. The report demands that children 10 and older be given a “comprehensive sexuality education” by governments, aid organizations and other groups, and that young people should be seen as “sexual beings.”
“Young people have the right to be informed about sexuality and to have access to contraceptives and other services,” Bert Koenders, the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation, wrote in the foreword to the report. It was his organization that helped fund the report.
The report argues that sex education should be “recast” to show sexuality as a “positive force for change and development, as a source of pleasure, an embodiment of human rights and an expression of self.”
Much like a U.N. report released last August that advocated teaching masturbation to children as young as 5, “Stand and Deliver” has set off a wave of protest among religious and conservative groups.
Ed Mechmann, spokesman for New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, charged that Planned Parenthood was “trying to teach children sex without values and that sex is a matter of pleasure and done without consequences.”
He said religions like Catholicism and Islam teach sex as part of a much bigger picture and that Planned Parenthood was trying to de-link sex from traditional values.
“It is part of an effort to get children to reject traditional values and accept a liberal American-European view,” he said. “In many traditional countries — Catholic and Muslim — it won’t work and should be seen as cultural imperialism.”
Mechmann also charged that Planned Parenthood’s report was compromised because it has a financial stake advocating the changes. “The difference between Planned Parenthood and us is that we don’t make money off what we teach and say. They do. They make money off contraceptives and abortions,” he said.
Michelle Turner, president of the Maryland-based Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum, said Planned Parenthood was simply trying to eliminate parental say.
“What are they trying to do? They are trying to eliminate the role of mom and dad in the family,” Turner said. “For Planned Parenthood to decide that governments, private organizations and religious organizations should make decisions about kids’ sexuality is just going too far.”
“It is part of a bigger push to change the way we think about sex,” she said. That sex is all about pleasure and there are no consequences. They are wrong. No matter how much we teach children, some will make mistakes. They will forget. And Planned Parenthood doesn’t want to deal with that,” she said.
“They see religious groups, especially those that counsel abstinence and waiting until marriage, as bad guys,” she added. “We aren’t.”
Planned Parenthood said it was unable to comment because the report was issued by its European office and it was unable to contact them.

An orchestrated campaign is being waged against climate change science to undermine public acceptance of man-made global warming, environment experts claimed last night.
The attack against scientists supportive of the idea of man-made climate change has grown in ferocity since the leak of thousands of documents on the subject from the University of East Anglia (UEA) on the eve of the Copenhagen climate summit last December.
Free-market, anti-climate change think-tanks such as the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in the US and the International Policy Network in the UK have received grants totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds from the multinational energy company ExxonMobil. Both organisations have funded international seminars pulling together climate change deniers from across the globe.
Many of these critics have broadcast material from the leaked UEA emails to undermine climate change predictions and to highlight errors in claims that the Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035. Professor Phil Jones, who has temporarily stood down as director of UEA’s climactic research unit, is reported in today’s Sunday Times to have “several times” considered suicide. He also drew parallels between his case and that of Dr David Kelly, found dead in the wake of the row over the alleged “sexing up” of intelligence in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Professor Jones said he was taking sleeping pills and beta-blockers and had received two death threats in the past week alone.
Climate sceptic bloggers broadcast stories last week casting doubts on scientific data predicting dramatic loss of the Amazon rainforest. All three stories, picked up by mainstream media, questioned the credibility of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the way it does its work. A new attack on climate science, already dubbed “Seagate” by sceptics, relating to claims that more than half the Netherlands is in danger of being submerged under rising sea levels, is likely to be at the centre of the newest skirmish in coming weeks.
A complicated web of relationships revolves around a number of right-wing think-tanks around the world that dispute the threats of climate change. ExxonMobil is a key player behind the scenes, having donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past few years to climate change sceptics. The Atlas Foundation, created by the late Sir Anthony Fisher (founder of the Institute of Economic Affairs), received more than $100,000 in 2008 from ExxonMobil, according to the oil company’s reports.
Atlas has supported more than 30 other foreign think-tanks that espouse climate change scepticism, and co-sponsored a meeting of the world’s leading climate sceptics in New York last March. Called “Global Warming: Was It Ever Really a Crisis?”, it was organised by the Heartland Institute – a group that described the event as “the world’s largest-ever gathering of global warming sceptics”. The organisation is another right-wing think-tank to have benefited from funding given by ExxonMobil in recent years.

Three months after the shocking revelation came to light that top climate scientists had manipulated data to arrive at their erroneous conclusions concerning ‘man-made global warming,’ the media in the United States has still yet to report a single word about the scandal.

Newspapers in the U.K., however, have been all over the story, engaging in relentless investigative journalism that once could be found on this side of the pond. And now that those papers have essentially blown to bits the theory of man-made global warming, one Canadian newspaper proclaimed today the following headline–‘The Great Global Warming Collapse.’
The writer provides the following telling quote:
“The global warming movement as we have known it is dead,” the brilliant analyst Walter Russell Mead says in his blog on The American Interest. It was done in by a combination of bad science and bad politics.
Not only has it been discovered that some climate scientists cooked the books to promote a personal political agenda but it is safe to say that it has also been discovered the motivation behind the scandal. As the article cited above reports, it’s all about grants:
Mr. Pachauri’s own Energy and Resources Unit, based in New Delhi, has collected millions in grants to study the effects of glacial melting – all on the strength of that bogus glacier claim, which happens to have been endorsed by the same scientist who now runs the unit that got the money. Even so, the IPCC chief is hanging tough. He insists the attacks on him are being orchestrated by companies facing lower profits.
Mr. Pachauri, of course, is the head of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Further, writing in Front Page Magazine Dr. Walter E. Williams, professor of economics at George Mason University, quotes the founder of The Weather Channel, John Coleman, as saying that not only did certain climate scientists and the IPCC manipulate data on the weather, but so did the National Climate Data Center, which is part of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Coleman exposes the shocking fraud in a five-part documentary on this latest revelation concerning the scandal. Dr. Williams states,
The Coleman documentary presents research by computer expert E. Michael Smith and Certified Consulting Meteorologist Joseph D’Aleo. During the 1960s and into the 1980s, the number of stations used for calculating global surface temperatures was about 6,000. By 1990, the number of stations dropped rapidly to about 1,500. Most of the stations lost were in the colder regions of the Earth. Not adjusting for their lost made temperatures appear to be higher than was in fact the case. According to Science & Environmental Policy Project, Russia reported that CRU was ignoring data from colder regions of Russia, even though these stations were still reporting data. That means data loss was not simply the result of station closings but deliberate decisions by CRU to ignore them in order to hype their global warming claims. D’Aleo and Smith report that our NCDC engaged in similar deceptive activity where they have dropped stations, particularly in colder climates, higher elevations or closer to the polar regions. Temperatures are now simply projected for these colder stations from other stations, usually in warmer climates.
Thus, no data was received from colder climates. The effect was a drastically skewed picture of average global temperatures due to lack of data from cold regions and an overabundance of data from warmer regions.
Dr. Williams also ventures the irrefutable observation that the motive for perpetrating such fraud is the ‘trillions of dollars and social control that is at stake’ for the vested political and economic interests.
It’s all about the money and the social control.

How do you ecplaind the two most used centers to explain Global Warming have admitted to lying? The IPCC and CRU have been caught in lies or admitted to lying. That makes any data you can come up with a lie also. Do you still want to use lying data?

Discredited climate theories make strange bedfellows. In his State of the Union address last week, President Obama said there was “overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change.” In his most recent message to the world, Osama bin Laden said that climate change “is not an intellectual luxury but an actual fact.” It’s nice to see these two leaders can agree on something.
The hitch is that the man-caused catastrophic global warming theory is dead, and it needs to be buried. Evidence had been mounting for years that there were problems with the global warming model; most telling was that the globe refused to warm up. Carbon emissions continued apace, but the world began cooling. This is why true believers abandoned the “global warming” brand name and tried to shift the debate to the more ambiguous label “climate change,” which is something the rest of us like to refer to as “weather.”
The dam broke with Climategate when hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit revealed that global warming advocates had for years attempted to hide conflicting data and silence their professional critics. British authorities have determined that the university broke freedom-of-information laws by denying information to scientists seeking to check claims that global warming was caused by human activity.
Evidence is emerging that the data had been rigged all along. Russian analysts noted that British temperature calculations excluded data from 40 percent of Russian territory, much of which showed no increase in temperature in the past 50 years. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also cherry-picked data, cutting Canadian data sources from 600 to 35 and relying on only one monitor for all of Canada above the Arctic Circle. This was done even though Canada operates 1,400 weather stations, 100 of which are in the Arctic.
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is having its own scandal regarding a finding in its Nobel Peace Prize-winning 2007 report that glaciers in India were rapidly disappearing. It is now revealed that this dramatic claim was based not on years of patient observation and research but anecdotes from a hiking magazine and a student’s master’s thesis. IPCC Chairman Rajendra K. Pachauri knew about the erroneous information before December’s Copenhagen climate summit but maintained the falsehood. He even denounced a report from India that showed the glaciers were in far less jeopardy as “unsubstantiated research.” Last month, Mr. Pachauri published a sexually explicit novel, further diminishing his professional reputation.
Climate scientists have to come to grips with some highly inconvenient truths. World temperatures continue to decline as carbon emissions increase. Chilly Scotland is facing its coldest winter in a century. Arctic sea ice is not vanishing. Polar bears are experiencing a baby boom. Water vapor appears to play as important a role in the climate as carbon emissions. Sunspot activity may be more important than both combined. Meanwhile, climate change fanatics seek to blame capitalism and productivity for global warming, global cooling, too much snow, not enough snow, hurricanes, tornadoes and even the Haiti earthquake.
The simplistic and increasingly discredited theory of carbon-based, man-caused global warming needs to be discarded, and the scientists who sought to squelch skeptics and artificially inflate their own reputations must be disciplined. Alas, Mr. Obama and Mr. bin Laden need to update their talking points.

I don’t think you are a scientist and if you were I’m sure you wouldn’t imply that because two studies have been discredited that all other studies that show that humans contribute to climate change should be automatically dismissed? Glacial melting – well Rose – my theory is that the glaciers may be a cyclical thing OR we are destined to have a hot planet no matter what anyone does. I think the sun and its flares have something to do with it. The sun and I don’t like smiley faces.
There used to be a tropical rain forest in Michigan but it is not there now I’ve heard.

George W. Bush heard about Fort Hood, got in his car without any escort, apparently they did not have time to react, and drove to Fort Hood. He was stopped at the gate and the guard could not believe who he had just stopped. Bush only ask for directions to the hospital then drove on. The gate guard called that “The president Is on Fort Hood and driving to the hospital.” The base went bananas looking for Obama. When they found it was Bush they immediately offered escort and Bush simply told them to shut up and let him visit the wounded and the dependents of the dead. He stayed at Fort Hood for over six hours and was finally asked to leave by a message from the White House. Obama flew in days later and held a “photo ” session in a gym and did not even go to the hospital. All this I picked up from two soldiers here who happened to be at Fort Hood when it happened.

Why do the Pro-Choice people get upset with women who choose Life?
Because the want to have it all, Sami. I used to be pro-choice and now I am less so. I believe it should be limited to rape, incest and the health of the mother. HOWEVER – it must be done within hours of the event.
I was never a fan of NOW. Gloria Steinem was interesting but they are all so rigid. Perhaps in those days one had to be fierce and rigid in order to counter whatever male reaction was there. Who knows. I think you can use your brain and debating skills to more effect that a million organizations. They don’t like Sarah Palin because they can’t be like her. They don’t recognize anything of themselves in her. They do not realize that in placing her outside of their experience they are committing political suicide.

The reason why some ANTI-life women (such as NOW get mouthy when it comes to bashing anti-abortion folks is that they are afraid that females will be forced to accept mother-hood. They see pregnancy as a punishment, diminished capacity to job promotions, & as a form of slavery, etc..
They also see abortions as a way out of responsibilities of raising a child.
They are failing to recognize what we all can not change (our biology). Women get pregnant & men don’t.
There was a time when abortions were illegal, except for saving life of the mother. Then they made it legal for any woman up to certain amount of months.
Then the idea came up that the government could offer to sterilize these low income females & give these females some money. But this was too controversial, so the project got scrapped.
Then a bunch of low income females (mostly blacks & hispanics) wanted abortions at tax dollar expense. That is when abortions were seen as a form of birth control.
One of these days , we are gonna find a bunch of females not being able to get pregnant because somebodies (powers-that-be behind the scene) have sterilized them. Have you noticed that young girls are having menstrual periods at a VERY early age. Somebodies on the down-low is playing God.
You expressed an answer to Sami’s question best. You filled in the blanks from my statement “they want to have it all.” Good to see you, A. And good to touch base with your wisdom.

just a few comments about some of the recent discussion.
re: human-caused climate change. guess what peeps? climate is not static! It changes naturally and reacts to natural occurances like volcanos. It is a dynamic system. I am no climatologist but it doesn’t take one to realize that outside variables can have an effect if significant enough. Yes the planet warms and cools without human intervention but is it at all possible that our actions can have a negative effect?
re: choice. Sami, where have you read womens’ reactions to choosing life that expressed upset that the choice was life? I would love to read that.
It’s easy to explain why a woman chooses an abortion. She doesn’t want the responsibility. She wants it all. But there are as many reasons for aborting as there are reasons for not. Some say its selfish. Some think its courageous. It doesn’t cost anything to be critical of the woman who chooses not to produce another life on this planet. Talk and condemnation are cheap.
tellit, I am sorry you get so charged up over the death of those you oppose politically. And that story about Bush at Ft. Hood? You should really hold judgement until you know all the facts. There could have been some serious security issues with Bush being there. He just showed up? Well, I’m sorry but what was it he was trying to accomplish? I’m sure the victims of the attack were thrilled to see him, but was it really the time to visit the wounded???
and the comparison of the first lady’s aides is probably exagerated. Are we to believe that none of the other first lady’s had dual assistants with their husbands like Michelle does? I’m not saying that Michelle doesn’t have more help than the others, but I doubt if the comparisons are fair.

I envy you that you can be so sure that you are right. You exhibit characteristics of a man who knows what he believes and knows in his heart that he is right and nothing will cause you to waiver. You don’t need a scientific study to refute the predominant scientific opinion. You only need to discredit one or two of those who claim humans impact climate and to you that is proof that it is all a hoax. I think you should open a university. There are lots of wanna be scientists who would love your criteria for science experiments. In fact, why practice science when all you have to do is discredit it and then surmise that the theory is false and somehow what you believe is true? hmmm… is there a name for that? oh yeah. it’s called delusional. hahaha

Theirs, however, is not the only study that shows a correlation between human activity and climate. So where’s the study that shows that climate is not affected by humans?

I believe in some cases they were trying to cut corners. They relied on observations from hikers and other non-scientists. You can’t rely on the amateur observations of non-professionals. So what is the alternative? Get photos of the glacier over time and analyze them. But just because a person who says that the glaciers are receding because they observed it to be true, does not mean its true. Conversely, just because that person is not a scientist, does not automatically make their statement false.
The hardest part of denial is admitting to it.

okay, it’s been fun but I am ready to drop this debate. I will go to my grave knowing that at least I tried to help people to see that everything we do has an effect. You may reject the education you recieved foxy, but I am thankful for things I learned about the way the ecosystem works and the effects of negative feedback on a system. It is very difficult for me to fathom how intelligent people can dismiss our impact so readily. It saddens me.
