Active perverse suppression, more so than promotion, of female candidates seems more relevant to the debate of gender and politics.
Hi there to friends at HillBuzz! I read your recent article about female office seekers with interest and found myself nodding in agreement with what you put forth. We will have to agree to disagree on Ruth Bader Ginsburg though, lol.
In your article, Question: Should you vote for someone just because she’s a woman?, you make some very good points:
Here’s a very important question to us, and one that we’re sure will spark a great deal of spirited debate today: should you vote for someone just because she’s a woman?
No.
See, as example, Claire McCaskill.
See, also, HRH Princess Caroline of Kennedy. Kathleen Sebelius. Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Barbara Boxer. Mary Landrieu. Blanche Lincoln. Martha Coakley. Jennifer Brunner. There are a lot of women who’ve either done terrible things in their positions, or are just bad for the jobs they seek.
What’s interesting is that we’re always accused around here of liking both Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin because they are women. Yes, they are women, but that’s not why we like them. We like Michelle Bachmann, too, and she’s a woman. Nancy Pelosi’s a woman, but we don’t like her. We like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but can’t stand Sonya Sotomayor, the “wise Latina”. Like Laura Bush, don’t care for Michelle Obama. Don’t like Helen Thomas, would love to be friends with Cokie Roberts. Adore Michelle Malkin, think Katie Couric is a twit. Have grown to appreciate Ann Coulter and we’re huge fans of Liz Cheney, but think Campbell Brown and Joy Behar are fools.
There are good women, and bad women, just as there are good men and there are bad men. Some of the good ones are Democrats, and some are Republicans. There are bad people of the female gender on both sides of the aisle.
This is the point where we break from many of our friends in PUMA-land…
I have blogged on the subject of female candidates and office holders in the past because of a despicable social double standard on the part of many private persons and public figures. I want to see female candidates given a fair and level playing field.
To that end, I respond to your query as to whether to vote for a female candidate on the basis of her status as a female, with this: I contend the real question is whether to vote against a female candidate on the basis of her status as female.
The attitudes and behaviors I have observed are startling and deeply disturbing with respect to socially permissive sexist abuse and bias heaped on female office holders and candidates running for office.
- Too many opposing a female candidate often use her gender as a sexist club with which to bash, demean, and defeat her.
- Women, more so than men, seem to be biased against female candidates on the basis of their status as female.
- The likelihood of a woman being voted against, on the basis of being a woman candidate for POTUS/VPOTUS, is high. Not so, for male candidates.
No one gets a pass for gender bias and sexism from me, regardless of their political leanings or party or the political leanings or party of a female candidate or office holder.
There is no place in this country for social tolerance of this kind of behavior:

Good Morning Belle!
We are supposed to trust unemployment numbers and they lost 500,000 jobs?
I consider this highly suspicious and cause for great concern in whether we are ever being told the truth.
Very interesting Blog Post this morning VF.
You give a fresh new perspective to this issue as always.
Belle,
The numbers that were added caused the unemployment numbers to go down.
Another Jedi mind trick.
thank you dear… I really appreciate that.

I would never tell a woman her place is in the kitchen…
That’s my domain!
An overwhelming majority of American voters agree on at least one thing — the Founding Fathers would be unhappy with the way things are going in Washington these days. So says a whopping 84 percent of voters, including a large majorities of Democrats (77 percent), Republicans (92 percent) and independents (81 percent).

VERY interesting survey results!!!
I wonder how much of Glenn Beck’s teachings of our founding fathers has affected the outcome of that survey.
Glenn Beck jumped on Sarah Palin when she was not forth coming as to which FF was her favorite. She eventually answered George Washington. An MSNBC Wanker dumped on Sarah about it on air and then stated her favorite was Lincoln… what a total dumb ass.

Glenn Beck’s Program is far more far reaching than anyone had ever expected. His name is now a house hold word. Not a good one in Lib Households. lol
The Dow Jones dipped below 10,000 this morning.
To early to tell which way it will go throughout the day.
Happy Friday peeps!
Are we ready to rumble????
Love your post VF, I have lots to say about this issue, but most of what comes to mind would be considered sarcastic. hahaha You know I’m with you… 😉
foxy, I have a poster in my kitchen (it’s got a 50’s theme) with a caricature of a domestic looking wife (a hottie at that!) and the caption says “Don’t assume I cook”
I like how it juxtaposes against my shelf full of cookbooks.
I have yet to offend anyone and no man has responded by holding back on the household chores. haha they wouldn’t dare. lol

Good morning Rose. Sounds like you are full of energy and ready to go this morning.
you are so right sami…Come with me!
Dow Jones down 45 points and below 10,000.
You would think the JOBS report would have given Wall Street a Boost. Hmmmmm?
Do they know something we don’t?

Rose,
Timing is everything. Where are we going?
The white death is here!! I can’t stand snow after Christmas.
The Dow is taking a nose dive… hmmm I wonder why?? It’s only the beginning of what’s to come. People don’t like to be lied to.
Sam wrote: Do they know something we don’t?
yes.
Ohio,
I have got 2 to 4 inches of Globally Warmed snow heading my way.
Sounds like it has hit your area already.
Just think of Al Gore and it will melt away.
we have the least amount of snow this winter than we’ve had since 1994. It’s a frickin’ tropical paradise here. Well sort of, if you consider Spring breakup and mudseason a paradise.

HAHAHA! They keep changing the amounts we are supposed to get. It went from 6″ last night to 10″-12″ a half an hour ago. Anything over an 1″ keeps me from going out.
Getting back on topic.
I am thinking it is high time for America to elect their first Woman President.
America is ripe for fresh and innovative thinking and I hate to admit this but men just are not.
Were still walking around with our Clubs and bragging about inventing the wheel.
Glenn’s Radio show is much funnier than his TV show.
belle, the jobs numbers sound like a sham. Do they count the underemployed? How many folks in this country are trying to get by on part-time employment and minimum wages?
p.s. did you take your meds this morning?

I am so jealous. I may have to pack up the dogs and take a road trip.. lol
My sister and her husband are leaving for vacation tomorrow. I have to watch their boxer… ughhhh. They are dropping her off tomorrow morning.
The woman’s movement has worked hard to get to the top and it is high time we see a woman President.
There are a lot of men who would support having a Woman on top.

India calls the UN on its global warming lies
India — the world’s largest democracy — has told the UN and its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (headed by India’s Rajendra Kumar Pachauri) to shove it.
“The Indian government’s move is a significant snub to both the IPCC and Dr Pachauri as he battles to defend his reputation following the revelation his most recent climate change report included false claims that most of the Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035. Scientists believe it could take more than 300 years for the glaciers to disappear,” the London Telegraph reported.
Oh, that is just the tip of the unmelting iceberg. There are the 42 phantom weather stations in rural China, thousands of MIA weather reporting stations that were removed after they showed, and of course those thousands of e-mails from Climategate which showed, among other things, that these “Nobel laureates” were trying to “trick” people as they plotted to “hide the decline” in global temperatures.
“In India the false claims have heightened tensions between Dr Pachauri and the government, which had earlier questioned his glacial melting claims. In Autumn, its environment minister Mr Jairam Ramesh said while glacial melting in the Himalayas was a real concern, there was evidence that some were actually advancing in the face of global warming,” the London Telegraph reported.
So India will do its own study — using something not tried before in climatology: Real science.
Ramesh: “There is a fine line between climate science and climate evangelism. I am for climate science. I think people misused [the] IPCC report, [the] IPCC doesn’t do the original research which is one of the weaknesses … they just take published literature and then they derive assessments, so we had goof-ups on Amazon forest, glaciers, snow peaks.
“I respect the IPCC but India is a very large country and cannot depend only on [the] IPCC and so we have launched the Indian Network on Comprehensive Climate Change Assessment.”
Climate evangelism. I love it.
Go, India, go. The United States is too chicken to stand up to political correctness and the UN bureaucracy.

Yes I took my meds. I thought I was going to stroke out when I saw the BIG LIE!!
