    Americans Shifted Party, Not Ideology

    The Wall Street Journal

The Democratic party’s problems can be traced to a simple mistake: Many in the party misread voters’ desire to switch parties in recent years for an ideological shift to the left.

The Democratic party’s problems, crystallized in the last-ditch scramble to save Ted Kennedy’s Massachusetts Senate seat in a special election Tuesday, can be traced to a simple mistake: Many in the party misread voters’ desire to switch parties in recent years as an ideological shift to the left.

In fact, there is little sign that Americans’ ideological tendencies changed much at all, even as voters gave control of Congress to Democrats in 2006 and handed President Barack Obama and the rest of his party a massive victory in 2008. Ideologically, the country remained throughout this period what it was at the outset: a center to center-right nation.

hroughout this period of Democratic rise, America was instead a centrist nation that simply had become fed up with Republican rule, largely because of concerns about the GOP’s competence and its tone deafness. Voters’ response was to shift parties more than ideologies.

In retrospect, the problem for Democrats was that some in the party—particularly in the liberal wing that is dominant in the House of Representatives—seemed to read this shift away from Republicans as a shift to the left. That became apparent first in the early-2009 construct of an economic stimulus package, written initially in the House. It went heavy on the kinds of public-spending programs liberals favor, and light on the tax cuts and small-business incentives that even more moderate Democrats like.

That mix subsequently was adjusted somewhat by the Senate and White House, but an impression was set. It then was cemented in the health-care debate, where the preference for larger over smaller, and an insistence on the so-called public option, or government-run insurance alternative, suggested a continued belief that the country had shifted toward these priorities of the left.

Yet the absence of an ideological shift can be seen by looking inside Wall Street Journal/NBC News polling throughout the last four years, the period when political winds were shifting so dramatically. The one constant has been voters’ ideological balance, which is virtually unchanged.

Brown win could spark legal battle
    Chris Frates,Manu Raju
    Sun, 17 Jan 2010 20:18:12 EST

A victory by Republican Scott Brown Tuesday in Massachusetts could quickly turn into a legal battle over the man he would replace – Sen. Paul Kirk – with the future of health reform in the Senate hanging in the balance.

Conservative commentator Fred Barnes is arguing that Kirk will lose his vote in the Senate after Tuesday’s special election, no matter who wins, signaling a possible GOP line of attack against health reform if it passes with Kirk’s vote.

GOP elected officials haven’t embraced that argument, and two academic election law experts contacted by POLITICO refuted the notion that Kirk will no longer be a senator after Tuesday’s election. But it’s a sign of the fierce legal and political battles likely to ensue if Brown upsets Democrat Martha Coakley in the race to fill the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat.

And Kirk would be in the middle of it all. Brown would take over for Kirk, a supporter of reform, and become the 41st vote against the health bill – ending the Democrats’ filibuster-proof majority and throwing reform’s future into serious doubt.

Republicans are worried that if Brown wins, Democrats will try to jam through a Senate health reform vote while Kirk still occupies the seat, in the time between Brown’s election and when he is certified the winner.

Kirk has pledged to vote for reform for as long as he remains a senator, even if Brown wins Tuesday. Some Republican lawyers are arguing he won’t have the chance.

“Appointed Senator Paul Kirk will lose his vote in the Senate after Tuesday’s election in Massachusetts of a new senator and cannot be the 60th vote for Democratic health care legislation, according to Republican attorneys,” Barnes, the Weekly Standard’s executive editor, wrote on the conservative magazine’s website Saturday night. “Based on Massachusetts law, Senate precedent, and the U.S. Constitution, Republican attorneys said Kirk will no longer be a senator after election day, period.”

So if Brown wins and Democrats vote on reform before he is seated, they will have to defend the rushed vote and, now, the legitimacy of Kirk’s clutch 60th vote.

Fearing a political backlash in the Senate, Democrats could try to pass the Senate bill through the House with no changes, sending it straight to President Barack Obama’s desk. But that is still considered a last-ditch maneuver fraught with its own perils.

Health care insiders see an even bigger problem should Brown win on Tuesday – nervous Senate Democratic moderates reconsidering their support for the bill.

“This has now turned into a referendum on health care in the bluest state. If Brown wins, technical 60 vote aside, there are a lot of mod[erate] Ds who are going to flip and this thing will be in trouble, not dead, but delayed and possibly scaled back,” said a Democratic health care industry insider, adding that a Republican win will make it that much harder for Democratic congressional leaders to sell a final deal to their members.

Republican strategist Phil Blando agreed. He said the argument over whether Kirk’s vote will count or not is “a legal technicality in the broader political earthquake that a Brown victory would signal. The concern isn’t that you lose Kirk’s vote, but that you lose Ben Nelson, Blanche Lincoln and Joe Lieberman and a bunch of Blue Dogs.”

And any Democratic move to slow-walk seating Brown in order to pass reform, Blando said, is “just naked, pure power politics where, at that point, you’re just thwarting the will of the people.”

Congressional Republicans, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, were wary of making the Kirk argument before Tuesday’s election and declined to say Sunday whether they plan to advance it should Brown win.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called the possibility that Kirk’s term may expire after Tuesday an “interesting academic question” on “Fox News Sunday.”

“What we have to do is wait until the election is held and then focus on that. I think the first step is to see what the people of Massachusetts say on Tuesday, and then everybody will be looking at the process for swearing in the new senator after that,” said McConnell, adding that the winner “should be sworn in promptly.”

Democrats pushed back against the GOP argument that Kirk loses his vote on Tuesday saying it would, at a minimum, raise constitutional questions because Kirk is a duly sworn U.S. senator.

Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said Republicans are wrong to argue that Kirk will no longer be a senator after Election Day, adding that the point will be moot when Coakley wins. Senate leadership will follow the law and Senate rules when seating the next senator from Massachusetts, Manley said.

Still, concern over Brown helped fuel last week’s Democratic scramble to finish reform. Obama and congressional Democrats held marathon White House meetings to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of reform and craft a final bill that can pass Congress.

On Sunday, Kirk spokesman Keith Maley told POLITICO that his boss has no plans to step aside until Massachusetts election officials take the necessary steps to certify the election and a new senator is sworn in.

“Senator Kirk plans to serve until the winner of the election is sworn into office and will work to ensure a seamless transition for the new senator,” Maley said.

To be sworn into the Senate, a member needs to have certification papers signed by the governor and the secretary of state, a precedent that was underlined over last year’s flap in seating Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.).

And if certification becomes an issue, Democrats and Republicans will almost certainly be forced to reverse the positions they took in another legal dispute in a Senate race: last year’s prolonged battle between Al Franken and Norm Coleman that didn’t end until the Minnesota Supreme Court sided with Franken in June.

For months, Republicans argued that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty didn’t have to sign the certification papers if Coleman were to take his case into federal court, thereby preventing Franken from taking his seat until the matter was resolved months – or even years – later. But Democrats accused the GOP of attempting to delay the certification in order to deny Democrats a pivotal vote in the Senate.

The battle didn’t come to a head since Coleman declined to press the matter into federal court, but if Massachusetts’ elected Democrats don’t swiftly move to certify Brown, and Senate Democrats don’t move to quickly swear him in, the Republican Party is almost certain to erupt – and consider legal challenges to Kirk’s standing in the Senate.

“The chances of an election result being so close that it is within the margin of litigation is very small,” said Rick Hasen, an election law expert at Loyola law school in Los Angeles. “That said, if it is that close, I am sure it would be litigated even more fiercely.”

David Schultz, a professor at Hamline University in St. Paul, said that “Democrats have to accept Brown as soon as Massachusetts certifies the election or delivers the election certificate to the Senate.”

Delaying it, Schultz said, would be the same situation as if Pawlenty refused to sign an election certificate for Franken.

“However, to argue that Kirk is no longer senator if Brown wins is not exactly accurate — Kirk is senator until the state certifies the election,” Schultz said. “The reason for that is that there could be a recount in a close election, litigation, etc. What could be really interesting is if the election is close, Brown appears to be a winner, and then the Democrats go to court to delay his seating.

“That would really open them up to criticism that parallels what happened in Minnesota,” Schultz said.

And it’s far from clear whether the legal argument that Kirk is no longer a senator would hold up.

Guy-Uriel Charles, an election law expert at Duke University, disagrees with the GOP’s contention, saying that the Senate is the ultimate judge of its members. Charles said that Kirk has the proper certifications to serve in office and, under the law, can do so “until the next person is certified.”

“Now if the Republicans were in charge in the U.S. Senate, they could do away with Massachusetts certification requirement,” Charles said. “But it is obviously unlikely that the Democrats would do so. If the Massachusetts’ Democrats engage in delaying tactics, if Brown wins, the Republicans can go the courts.

“But I don’t buy the argument that the results of the election itself, without certification, is sufficient to divest Kirk of the office.”

  36. Foxwood says:

The key portion of that article:

  39. samiam60 says:

This is very Interesting as President Obama said he did not want to have the State of the Union address until AFTER the HealthCarebill was passed. Hmmmmmmmmmm?

    Any thoughts on this anyone?

Obama to Deliver State of the Union on Jan. 27

President Obama will deliver his first State of the Union address on Wednesday, Jan. 27, Fox News learned Monday.

  40. samiam60 says:

The president’s televised address to a joint session of Congress will be at 9 p.m. ET. It is not known yet who will deliver the Republican response.

Besides being broadcast live on national television, the address will be streamed on the White House Web site.

The speech Obama delivered last year, just weeks after taking office, technically is not considered a State of the Union address.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama will also present his budget plan on Feb. 1 for fiscal year 2011, which starts on Oct. 1.

Obama may have a lot to highlight in his first address. According to an annual study by Congressional Quarterly, Obama set a record last year for getting Congress to vote his way. He won 96.7 percent of the votes on which he had clearly staked a position, nearly 4 percentage points higher than the previous record set by Lyndon Johnson in 1965.

The votes included the $787 billion stimulus package, confirming Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, bailing out the U.S. auto industry and allowing the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco.

But Obama still has a lot on his plate, including a cap-and-trade environmental plan, a possible second stimulus and a tax on banks that borrowed money from the government because they were deemed too big to fail.

Obama also has several difficult foreign policy issues pending, including a war in Afghanistan, a humanitarian crisis in Haiti, the relocation of detainees delaying the closure of Guantanamo Bay, an increasingly despotic Iran and the perennially delayed Middle East peace process.

The massive health care package is also no sure thing, particularly in light of Tuesday’s vote for a new senator from Massachusetts, which could upend the entire process.

Brookings Institution scholar Stephen Hess said in the speech, he expects Obama to take credit for all of the legislative accomplishments of the last year and then lay out his agenda for the next, which he says will be tricky.

“He is a president who has laid out an agenda much more specifically than previous presidents, which has gotten him into trouble because it’s a broad agenda,” he said. “He has a lot of pieces that have to be reconciled and it will be noted if any of them [are] not mentioned” in the speech.

Lee Edwards, a presidential historian with the Heritage Foundation, said Obama is under tremendous pressure to deliver a strong speech.

“I think in that sense, he’s realizing to organize a community is one thing and it’s another thing to organize a nation,” he said.

“I think he’s going to have to rise to the occasion,” he added. “People are going to be looking at him as questions are being raised about whether he is a one-termer, and does he have it in him to be the president that Democrats — and Republicans — are expecting him to be.”

Chicago Man Apparently Mauled to Death by Daughter’s Pit Bulls

CHICAGO — Chicago police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man from the city’s far South Side who was apparently fatally mauled by his daughter’s pit bulls.

The daughter told authorities she came home Sunday night and found her father, Johnny Wilson, lying on the living room floor, covered in blood.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Wilson suffered numerous bite wounds on various parts of his body.

The daughter turned over four adult pit bulls and two puppies to Chicago Animal Care and Control, where the dogs were being evaluated.

Neighbors said there was no sign of dog fighting at the Wilson residence, and that Wilson had never seemed to have any problem with the dogs in the past.

No charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

It’s Edgar Allan Poe’s (born in Boston) birthday.

Here’s a little bit of his bio:

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre,
He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family.
He began planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.[3]

Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today.

  61. Foxwood says:

Thanks Rose, Poe is one of my favorites.

    Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
    By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
    In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
    I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
    Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
    My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
    Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulcher there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

    User Rating:
    Gaily bedight,
    A gallant knight,
    In sunshine and in shadow,
    Had journeyed long,
    Singing a song,
    In search of Eldorado.

    But he grew old-
    This knight so bold-
And o’er his heart a shadow
    Fell as he found
    No spot of ground
    That looked like Eldorado.

    And, as his strength
    Failed him at length,
    He met a pilgrim shadow-
    “Shadow,” said he,
    “Where can it be-
    This land of Eldorado?”

    “Over the Mountains
    Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
    Ride, boldly ride,”
    The shade replied-
    “If you seek for Eldorado!”

  65. rosehips says:

I am intrigued with Edgar Allan Poe because I am reading the book about Wild Rose O’Neale Goodhow and her husband survived a fire in his youth at a theatre fundraiser for Poe (in Richmond VA), who was orphaned as an infant. Poe’s mother was a beloved actress who had died. Goodhow’s mother died in the theater fire along with some prominent Richmond politicians and community leaders, including the gov of VA. At least 68 people died in the fire and it left the city paralyzed in grief.

  66. rosehips says:

cool foxy, I remember Annabelle Lee!

  67. rosehips says:

ironically, another Edgar Allan Poe, the grandnephew of the writer, was Attorney General of MD from 1911-1915.

  68. rosehips says:

I can’t help but think that if Poe had lived past the young age of 40, he may have written so many more masterpieces. Imagine if Massachusetts had had universal health care? Poe was a poor writer and probably couldn’t afford medical care and so he died. so sad

I just realized that I’ve never read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” before today. It made him very popular, but still not a rich man. If he could only have profited from his great work, he may still be alive today. haha

The Raven” follows an unnamed narrator who sits reading “forgotten lore”[5] as a method to forget the loss of his love, Lenore. A “rapping at [his] chamber door”[5] reveals nothing, but excites his soul to “burning”.[6] A similar rapping, slightly louder, is heard at his window. When he goes to investigate, a raven steps into his chamber. Paying no attention to the man, the raven perches on a bust of Pallas.

Amused by the raven’s comically serious disposition, the man demands that the bird tell him its name. The raven’s only answer is “Nevermore”.[6] The narrator is surprised that the raven can talk, though it says nothing further. The narrator remarks to himself that his “friend” the raven will soon fly out of his life, just as “other friends have flown before”[6] along with his previous hopes. As if answering, the raven responds again with “Nevermore”.[6] The narrator reasons that the bird learned the word “Nevermore” from some “unhappy master” and that it is the only word it knows.[6]

Even so, the narrator pulls his chair directly in front of the raven, determined to learn more about it. He thinks for a moment, not saying anything, but his mind wanders back to his lost Lenore. He thinks the air grows denser and feels the presence of angels. Confused by the association of the angels with the bird, the narrator becomes angry, calling the raven a “thing of evil” and a “prophet”. As he yells at the raven it only responds, “Nevermore”.[7] Finally, he asks the raven whether he will be reunited with Lenore in Heaven. When the raven responds with its typical “Nevermore”, he shrieks and commands the raven to return to the “Plutonian shore”,[7] though it never moves. Presumably at the time of the poem’s recitation by the narrator, the raven “still is sitting”[7] on the bust of Pallas. The narrator’s final admission is that his soul is trapped beneath the raven’s shadow and shall be lifted “Nevermore”.[7]

  83. Hey Rose, Good to see you too girl.

It’s good to see everyone else too. No time these days for much of anything but surviving, however you all cross my mind, take care.

    Scott Brown (R)

    AGE: 50; born Sept. 12, 1959

EDUCATION: B.A. from Tufts University, 1981, J.D. from Boston College Law School, 1985

CAREER: Wrentham selectman, 1995-1998; State Rep. 1999-2004; State Senate 2004-present. Serves on Joint Committee on Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure; Joint Committee on Education; Joint Committee on Election Laws; Joint Committee on Higher Education; Joint Committee on Public Safety; and Homeland Security Joint Committee on Veterans & Federal Affairs. Massachusetts Army National Guard, 1979-present, currently holds rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

FAMILY: Lives in Wrentham with his wife, Gail Huff. The couple has two daughters in college, Ayla and Arianna.

Brown grew up in Wakefield, Mass., and had a tough childhood. His parents divorced when he was a baby, and each remarried three times. He spent his youth living with various relatives and getting into trouble, the New York Times reported.

Brown reportedly said that he was caught for stealing records as a 12-year-old, and that an encounter with a judge helped send him on the right path.

Brown was a basketball player in high school and went on to Tufts University. As an undergraduate he joined the Massachusetts National Guard (where he still serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps), all while reportedly singing and acting in campus productions and picking up modeling work.

In 1982, Brown, as a 22-year-old law student, was named ”America’s Sexiest Man” by Cosmopolitan magazine. The title netted him $1,000 and a photo shoot, including one picture in which Mr. Brown was covered only by his strategically placed arm. Brown said the money helped him pay for law school, according to the New York Times.

In August 1983, he completed airborne training at Fort Bragg, N.C., National Guard records show. Brown returned to Boston College that fall and received his law degree in 1985.

Brown’s political career started in 1992 when he was elected assessor in Wrentham, the Massachusetts town where he and his family live. Three years later, he served as a selectman, and was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1998. In March 2004 he was elected tothe State Senate in a special election to fill the seat of Cheryl Jacques.

During six terms in the Legislature, three each in the House and Senate, Brown has a modest record of legislative initiatives, but he has carved out a niche as a leading advocate for veterans, colleagues on both sides of the aisle said.

As a legislator, he has served on the Veterans and Federal Affairs Committee, the Hidden Wounds of War Commission, and the Governor’s Task Force on Returning Veterans. He lists among his achievements his authorship of a 2007 law that created a check-off box on state income tax forms for veterans to indicate whether they served in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The state uses the information to notify veterans of available services and benefits, including the “Welcome Home Bonus” that provides $1,000 for those returning from active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq.

He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 2006. Despite his long career, Brown, as a judge advocate, has never been in a unit sent to a combat zone such as Iraq or Afghanistan.

Brown did brief assignments in Paraguay in 2005 and in Kazakhstan in 2007. In Paraguay, he was part of an effort with US diplomats to raise awareness of American principles of justice, including cases involving military personnel, according to the Boston Globe. In Kazakhstan, he said he spent a week on a disaster, terrorism, and emergency preparedness exercise with military and civilian personnel from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and three former Soviet republics, the newspaper reported.

Brown was the landslide winner of the December 2009 Republican contest, with 89 percent of the vote; Jack E. Robinson, a businessman, garnered 11 percent.

Black Conservatives Take Lead Role in Tea Party Movement

    By Judson Berger

    – FOXNews.com

Though the tea party movement has attracted criticism for its supposed lack of diversity, minority activists who are involved say the movement has little to do with race, and that it is attracting a more diverse crowd every day.

Lloyd Marcus’ conservatism started when he was 9.

His family had just moved out of the “ghetto” to a brand-new high rise in Baltimore — within months, he said, the “dream come true” turned into a nightmare, as the building of welfare-collecting black residents became a den of crime.

His father moved the family out as soon as he got a job with the city fire department, but “my cousins never escaped,” Marcus said. He cried as he told the story.

Marcus, a black conservative who is now involved in the growing tea party movement, attributes the problems of his childhood neighborhood, his extended family and the black community in general to a “cradle-to-grave government dependency” that in the case of his cousins enabled an idle life of crime and drug abuse.

To Marcus, President Obama’s policies perpetuate that dependency. That’s why, he says, it baffles him and other black conservatives when the tea party movement is dismissed as somehow anti-black, as a rowdy bunch of ignorant, white protesters who have it in for the nation’s first black president.

“This is the nicest angry mob I’ve ever seen,” Marcus said.

Marcus is one of a number of black conservatives who have joined up with, and helped lead, the conservative tea party movement since its inception. Though the movement has attracted criticism for its supposed lack of diversity — MSNBC host Chris Matthews recently called the groups “monochromatic” and “all white” — those minority activists who are involved say the movement has little to do with race, and that it is attracting a more diverse crowd every day.

“I think a lot of black people are waking up from their Obama night-of-the-living-dead fog,” Marcus said. “They were walking around like zombies going Obama, Obama, Obama.”

He and other black conservatives connected with one of the hundreds of tea party groups across America were largely active in conservative and Republican causes before the movement’s start in early 2009. They spoke and wrote about the need for smaller government, lower spending and lower taxes and warned that Obama’s candidacy would pose a threat to those values.

But in the tea party movement they found a group that not only reflected their views but provided a platform.

Marcus campaigned with a group against Obama in the 2008 election. But the Florida resident, who is a musician, gained a degree of fame in the tea party world a year ago when he cut a “tea party anthem” song — in it, he belted about the dangers of wealth redistribution to a gospel-sounding backup track.

“In less than a week, the song was national,” Marcus said. He was asked to sing at an Orlando tea party rally last spring and has since performed at rallies across the country. He’s traveled cross-country on both Tea Party Express tours and plans to join up for the third tour this March.

Marcus does not advocate for the creation of a third party, but said the tea party groups should serve to pull the Republican Party back to the conservative roots from which it has strayed.

William Owens, a black author and publisher who with his wife traveled on the Tea Party Express tours with Marcus and has spoken at just about every stop along the way, also came out strongly against Obama in 2008. He published the book, “Obama: Why Black America Should Have Doubts,” before the election, in an attempt to address what he called a “misguided passion” toward the former Illinois senator in black America.

When the tea party movement started, he said he found a way to build on what he was already doing, outside the Republican Party system which he calls out of touch. He first spoke at a rally in Las Vegas on tax day last April.

“It was just a natural fit,” Owens said.

He said the rallies are still “mostly white,” but that more blacks are getting involved. He took particular umbrage at Matthews’ comment, blasting out a press release that criticized the MSNBC host for “pushing conservative black Americans to the back of the media bus.”

Owens now publishes a journal documenting the tea party cross-country tours. The Multi-Cultural Conservative Coalition is also sponsoring the next leg of the Tea Party Express.

Despite the enthusiastic involvement of black conservatives in the tea party rallies and trips, Obama still enjoys seemingly unshakable support from the majority of black Americans. A recent poll from Gallup put Obama’s approval rating among blacks at 91 percent. Among whites, that number was 42 percent.

Tea party groups also might not be doing themselves any favors when some of their supporters are photographed holding somewhat shocking signs at rallies — such as one last year that said, “The White House has a lyin’ African.”

But such demonstrators may be the exception.

Charles Lollar, a Maryland-based tea party supporter who is black, said there’s no validity to the racism charges.

“I’ve seen black faces in the crowd. I’ve seen Latino faces in the crowd. … It’s not a movement of color. It’s not a movement of party. It’s a movement of principle. It’s a movement of America,” Lollar said.

Lollar started speaking at tea party events last winter and said his biggest motivation is opposition to the stimulus package — both the $787 billion package that passed last February and the sequel that some Democrats are trying to push this year.

Lollar has since parlayed his activism into a high-stakes campaign. The Charles County businessman is hoping win the GOP nomination to challenge House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., in the congressional midterm this November.

“When we beat him in November, it’s going to send a strong message across the country,” he said.

Lollar, whose previous post was as chairman of the Charles County Republican Central Committee, has an uphill battle to unseat the nation’s second most powerful House Democrat.

Hoyer has been in office nearly three decades, and his latest campaign finance report put his available cash at $1.3 million. Lollar said he’s raised $40,000 — he aims to raise $2.5 million by fall.

Lollar is running from within the GOP apparatus. But it remains to be seen whether the party establishment will reach out to other tea party conservatives like him to ensure they stay loyal to the Republican Party and not challenge it like Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman did in New York state. Hoffman, who is white, pushed out the Republican candidate in the race for Congressional District 23, and ended up losing narrowly to Democrat Bill Owens.

David Avella, executive director of Republican recruiter GOPAC, said his organization hasn’t been actively mining the tea party movement for state and local candidates but that the groups could prove fertile ground for candidates.

“Many in the tea party movement are Republicans who want to make sure the party gets back to its fiscal discipline days,” he said, calling those activists natural “allies.”

Tea partiers point to recent political coups they say demonstrate the movement’s broadening influence and appeal. And they say they feel a certain freedom in the scattered leadership of the movement, as opposed to the top-down style of the GOP.

“I think it’s great that we have all these different organizations and they have nobody in charge,” Marcus said.

Marcus cited Hoffman’s influence in the New York race as well as Republican Scott Brown’s bid for the Massachusetts Senate seat once held by Ted Kennedy. Brown, while not sprouting from the tea party movement, is supported by it as he enjoys a late-in-the-game surge in the race.

“This is a movement that has swept the country,” Marcus said. “It has really been the rebirth of conservatism in America.”

Interestingly, Marcus said he used to work with one of Obama’s biggest supporters, Oprah Winfrey, decades ago at a local station in Baltimore before she moved to Chicago.

The two have since lost touch, he said.

  163. samhenry says:

From OFA – signed by Obama: – 10 minutes ago

Right now, the polls are open to elect a new senator to the seat that my friend Ted Kennedy held for 47 years.

The choice could not be more stark, and the result could not be of greater consequence — for Massachusetts or the nation.

The Bay State can send progressive champion Martha Coakley to Washington to fight for everything we believe in — health reform, getting all of our money back from Wall Street, and holding corporate interests accountable.

Or the Senate can get one more person already walking in lockstep with Washington Republicans.

The polls are still open, the choice has not been made, and you still have a crucial role to play by calling voters in Massachusetts. In a low-turnout special election like this one, every single voter counts.

    Please call Massachusetts voters today.

Opponents of change and progress have been pouring money and resources into the Commonwealth — they want to keep things just as they are.

The most important thing you can do to stand up to them is call voters and urge them to get out to vote for the leader we need representing Massachusetts.

In a race as close as this one, no matter how many voters you call, you could tip the balance.

So please make sure you do everything you can today. Click here to start calling voters in Massachusetts right away:

With districts redrawn, ingratiating himself to black politicians on his side of the city, and rules loosened on voter registration, Obama could set out to run. And he did. Obama sought the New Party endorsement, which required him to sign a contract that he would keep up his relationship with the New Party.
The end of the story is simple. Obama won the New Party’s nomination and, through fusion with his Democratic votes, he became the Democratic nominee. Using ACORN’s get out the vote efforts and relying on his gerrymandered Democrat district, Obama moved on to the State Senate. While there, he paid back the New Party and the far left. He opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, he opposed legislation that would have prohibited the sale of pornography across the street from elementary schools and churches, and he supported allowing criminals to sue their victims if their victims injured the criminals in self-defense.

    ____________________________________________________

An article from American Thinker by Geoffrey P. Hunt

    Anatomy of a Failing Presidency

Barack Obama is on track to have the most spectacularly failed presidency since Woodrow Wilson. In the modern era, we’ve seen several failed presidencies–led by Jimmy Carter and LBJ. Failed presidents have one strong common trait– they are repudiated, in the vernacular, spat out. Of course, LBJ wisely took the exit ramp early, avoiding a shove into oncoming traffic by his own party. Richard Nixon indeed resigned in disgrace, yet his reputation as a statesman has been partially restored by his triumphant overture to China 20.

But, Barack Obama is failing. Failing big. Failing fast. And failing everywhere: foreign policy, domestic initiatives, and most importantly, in forging connections with the American people. The incomparable Dorothy Rabinowitz in the Wall Street Journal put her finger on it: He is failing because he has no understanding of the American people, and may indeed loathe them. Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard says he is failing because he has lost control of his message, and is overexposed. Clarice Feldman of American Thinker produced a dispositive commentary showing that Obama is failing because fundamentally he is neither smart nor articulate; his intellectual dishonesty is conspicuous by its audacity and lack of shame.

But, there is something more seriously wrong: How could a new president riding in on a wave of unprecedented promise and goodwill have forfeited his tenure and become a lame duck in six months? His poll ratings are in free fall. In generic balloting, the Republicans have now seized a five point advantage. This truly is unbelievable. What’s going on?

No narrative. Obama doesn’t have a narrative. No, not a narrative about himself. He has a self-narrative, much of it fabricated, cleverly disguised or written by someone else. But this self-narrative is isolated and doesn’t connect with us. He doesn’t have an American narrative that draws upon the rest of us. All successful presidents have a narrative about the American character that intersects with their own where they display a command of history and reveal an authenticity at the core of their personality that resonates in a positive endearing way with the majority of Americans. We admire those presidents whose narratives not only touch our own, but who seem stronger, wiser, and smarter than we are. Presidents we admire are aspirational peers, even those whose politics don’t align exactly with our own: Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Harry Truman, Ike, and Reagan.

But not this president. It’s not so much that he’s a phony, knows nothing about economics, and is historically illiterate and woefully small minded for the size of the task–all contributory of course. It’s that he’s not one of us. And whatever he is, his profile is fuzzy and devoid of content, like a cardboard cutout made from delaminated corrugated paper. Moreover, he doesn’t command our respect and is unable to appeal to our own common sense. His notions of right and wrong are repugnant and how things work just don’t add up. They are not existential. His descriptions of the world we live in don’t make sense and don’t correspond with our experience.

In the meantime, while we’ve been struggling to take a measurement of this man, he’s dissed just about every one of us–financiers, energy producers, banks, insurance executives, police officers, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, post office workers, and anybody else who has a non-green job.
Expect Obama to lament at his last press conference in 2012: “For those of you I offended, I apologize. For those of you who were not offended, you just didn’t give me enough time; if only I’d had a second term, I could have offended you too.”

Mercifully, the Founders at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 devised a useful remedy for such a desperate state–staggered terms for both houses of the legislature and the executive. An equally abominable Congress can get voted out next year. With a new Congress, there’s always hope of legislative gridlock until we vote for president again two short years after that.

Yes, small presidents do fail, Barack Obama among them. The coyotes howl but the wagon train keeps rolling along.

Margaret Thatcher: “The trouble with Socialism is, sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.”

“When you subsidize poverty and failure, you get more of both.” – James Dale Davidson, National Taxpayers Union

“The more corrupt the state, the more it legislates.” – Tacitus

“A Liberal is a person who will give away everything he doesn’t own.” – Unknown

Just like all those ppl Lutnz was interviewing… The Dems voted brown because they don’t want a dictatorship, they want bipartisanship and ‘balance’ and they are turned off by Obama’s hateful attitude towards the people of America…

The Dem leadership can’t marginalize Republicans, Fox News or Tea Party grassroots by just labeling them derogatory names. It seems that was their only tactic to keep people from ‘thinking’… But it doesn’t work.

In one of the most stunning Senate upsets in recent memory, Scott Brown defeated Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley in a landslide victory that noone would have predicted just a few short weeks ago.

Voters all over Massachusetts are in shock today. One young man with a “Scott Brown is Truckin’ Awesome!” bumpersticker on his pick-up told this RR reporter that “I shoulda just stayed in bed, man. If I had to do it over again I wood of. 349. Hey SH, I’m so happy honey. Good to see you too! hahahha

This is so funny, I mean really I think they all should start to tuck their tails and run run run, run for the hills. Obama needs to STFU. He disgusts me. He’s screwed his own party, Ahahahaha.

sorry for that graphic abbreviation but I’m ticked off but a happier ticked off conservative.

They are alll going down and our country needs to pray and turn from our wicked ways, then and then only will our nation be healed from this monstrosity trying to take over and destroy what took over 200 years to create (the best and most liberated country in the world!) The land of the free and the land of opportunity.

Obama has done his best to destroy our greatness as fast as he possibly can.

Obama and his wife are the axis of racism and most people of color just cannot see the forest for the trees.

However, I think the tide is changing and WOOHOO! HOOHA!

    I am so angry though…

With hubs working an evening shift, I stretched out on the couch at 7:30pm to await the poll closing at 8:pm… and fell fast asleep

Woke up after midnight when he came home and was FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!

But what a treat… All broadcast from foxnews had been DVRed starting 8:pm through 11pm and I watched the drama through to the declaration of VICTORY though the acceptance speech. OMG!!!

Additionally, by then Keith Olbermann’s program was recycling and caught the last of that and the beginning of the Maddow show.

    AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Those loons were as entertaining as I had envisioned!!!!

Revenge is a dish best served COLD!

I will go write the first of multiple blogposts for today…. and WILL target Socialism, Obama, the DEM gang of Trolls in Congress and the Socialist Bloggers…
