New Weekly Jobless Claims Rise, Ongoing Claims Slow

New claims for unemployment insurance rose by 11,000 last week, more than economists had expected.

  23. samiam60 says:

WASHINGTON — The number of newly laid-off workers requesting unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week as jobs remain scarce amid a sluggish economic recovery.

The Labor Department said Thursday new claims for unemployment insurance rose by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 444,000. Wall Street economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected an increase of only 3,000.

The rise was partly a result of large seasonal layoffs in the retail, manufacturing and construction industries, a Labor Department analyst said. The second week of January usually sees the largest increase in claims, unadjusted for seasonal trends, during the year, the analyst said.

Still, the increase didn’t disrupt the longer-term downward trend in claims. The four-week average dropped to 440,750, its 19th straight drop and lowest level since August 2008.

Initial claims are considered a gauge of the pace of layoffs and an indication of companies’ willingness to hire new workers.

Claims have dropped steadily since last fall, as companies cut fewer jobs, raising hopes that hiring may increase soon. Initial claims have dropped by nearly 90,000, or 17 percent, since late October. Two weeks ago, new claims dropped to their lowest level since July 2008.

Despite the recent drop, the economy is not yet consistently generating net increases in jobs. The Labor Department said last week that employers cut 85,000 jobs in December, after adding only 4,000 in November. November’s increase was the first in nearly two years. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 10 percent.

Many economists say the four week average of claims will need to fall to below 425,000 to signal that the economy is close to generating net job gains.

Meanwhile, the number of people continuing to claim benefits dropped sharply to 4.6 million from 4.8 million the previous week. The continuing claims data lags initial claims by a week.

But the so-called continuing claims do not include millions of people who have used up the regular 26 weeks of benefits customarily provided by states, and are receiving extended benefits for up to 73 additional weeks, paid for by the federal government.

More than 5.3 million people were receiving extended benefits in the week ended Dec. 26, the latest data available. That’s a drop of about 135,000 from the previous week.

Washington (CNN) — The United States is closely monitoring a “credible threat” from al Qaeda in Yemen against the U.S. homeland, two senior officials told CNN.

At the same time, one official Wednesday cautioned that the threat is fairly general in nature and does not have too much specificity — and the second said this is not a case of “we connected the dots to something imminent.”

The first official did say, though, that the U.S. had gleaned that al Qaeda is already “adapting” to new U.S. security measures and that, in part, has raised the concerns.

    You Can Help Make History

On January 19th, a special election will be held in Massachusetts to fill the vacated seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. As most of us realize, it can have a profound impact on the nation, as well as Massachusetts.

Until a few weeks ago, it appeared that Martha Coakley would easily win Kennedy’s seat and extend the Democratic stranglehold.

However, in the ensuing weeks, Republican Scott Brown has closed the gap so dramatically that, according to several polls, he is now in a DEAD HEAT. A key reason for Brown’s success is the intensive use of “phone banks”, whereby activist supporters have been calling and encouraging swing voters to vote for Brown.

In addition to the Massachusetts regional phone banks, the Brown campaign offers a phone program for in-state AND out-of-state supporters to use in the comfort of their homes. Although it has been well- received, there have been a few minor problems.

To encourage wider usage of the CALL FROM HOME program, we have simplified the process by creating an easy-to-understand checklist that side-steps previous trouble spots.

Keep in mind that we are entering the last week before the election. A final, intensive effort is required for Brown’s campaign to be successful. For Patriots who would like to make a financial donation, go to:
http://www.brownforussenate.com and click on the red “Contribute” button upper right and/or if you’d like a piece of this historic action by making calls, please use the following:

    ———————————————————————

STEP #1 – OBTAINING AUTHORIZATION TO ACCESS THE CALL PROGRAM

    * Go to http://www.brownforussenate.com

    * Click on “Call From Home”

    * Disregard the LOG IN box that appears, and click on the “click here” link below the box.

    * On the “Make Calls From Home” page that appears, fill in the information requested, and click “Submit”.

    * A box will appear that says: “Thanks! Your response will now appear in my spreadsheet.”
** DO NOT click on the “Create your own form” link below … it’s an irrelevant distraction.

    * Realize that it will take ONE HOUR or more after you “Submit” before
you receive authorization to access the “Call From Home” program. It
requires a Scott Brown staffer to review and authorize your request.

    * You will eventually receive a “User Name” and a “Password” via the email address you submitted.

    STEP# 2 – MAKING CALLS

Once you’ve received your email authorization,

    * click on the Scott Brown website link … http://www.brownforussenate.com

    * Click on “Call From Home”

    * In the “Log In” box, type in your new “Username” and “Password”.

    * Click the “Log in” red button

    * Click “Tutorial” and follow the prompts

    * After completing the “Tutorial”, click the back button to repeat the
“Tutorial” or click “Begin Calling” if you are ready to start.

KEY POINT – Once you begin calling, DO NOT hang up at the end of a
call. When finished, simply click the “Hang up and Submit” red button
and begin the next call. (If you return the receiver to the cradle, you
will have to repeat the entire accessing process.) Hang up only when
you are finished, or if you want to take a break.

It will probably take a few calls to get comfortable. but beware, it might become addictive!

This is a rush transcript from “Hannity,” January 13, 2010. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: All eyes are on the Senate race in Massachusetts. Now as the Democrats scramble to save their 60 vote super majority the race between Democrat Martha Coakley and Republican Scott Brown has the Democrats acting desperate.

Now last night the Weekly Standard’s John McCormack was shoved to the ground by a Democratic operative after asking Coakley this simple question.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JOHN MCCORMACK, THE WEEKLY STANDARD: You said last night that there are no terrorists in Afghanistan? That they’re all in Yemen and Pakistan now? You stand by that?

SENATE CANDIDATE MARTHA COAKLEY, D-MASS. : I’m sorry, did someone else have a question?

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

HANNITY: Now the operative Michael Meehan can be seen on the right, Coakley is on the left, standing by watching the situation unfold and doing nothing. Now Meehan issued a statement earlier today saying, quote, “Last evening I was a little too aggressive in trying to help the attorney general get to her car and catch a flight.”
Joining me with more on this is the man in the center of it all, from the “Weekly Standard,” John McCormack.

    • Watch the video

John, I understand you got bruised and had a ripped-up suit. How are you holding up?

MCCORMACK: I’m doing just fine. It’s not too bad.

HANNITY: All right. Now you got a call from Meehan earlier today. He says, quote, “I apologized for my part.” How did the apology go?

MCCORMACK: I mean, he was very apologetic to me. I asked him if he disputed anything I wrote, and he said no. So pretty much all I could do is thank him for his apology and accept it.

HANNITY: He said, “But I clearly did not intend to cause John McCormack to trip and fall over that low fence.” Did you trip or were you pushed?

MCCORMACK: I mean, he knocked me. He knocked into me. He knocked into me which sent me into the fence which sent me to the ground. So whether he intended to knock me into an area without a fence that may be true. But the fact is, I mean, he knocked into me and I ended up on the ground because of it.

HANNITY: All right. Why don’t you walk our audience through? We can show the videotape of this. Why don’t you walk our audience through exactly what happened from your perspective?

MCCORMACK: I guess the play-by-play, I asked that question, she declines to answer it, she takes one more question, and begins to walk away. And within a matter of seconds I asked a question about while these health care industry lobbyists are here supporting her at this Democratic fundraiser, she’s supposed to be taking on the Democratic — she’s supposedly taking on the health care lobbyists in Washington, D.C.

And she didn’t answer. And before I knew it, I got knocked into on my right side. I think might have been a head-check, I don’t know exactly how he hit me. But he pushed me into this steel railing, metal railing. I ended up on the ground.

And then he actually helped me up. And he began — he asked, are you all right? And in my view he was feigning concern which is clearly displayed by the video, the fact that he continues to push-up against me aggressively.

HANNITY: Well, that’s the point. At the end of this video, and if we could just rack this up again. At the end of this, he’s like in your face and you’re trying to — you’re holding something up and — why didn’t you tell us specifically what had happened there?

MCCORMACK: Well, yes, I’m holding up my tape recorder so it doesn’t get broken and also hoping that if anyone is watching they’d see that I’m not pushing him. And also he begins to demand for my press credentials. And if there’s any moment that I regret from last night is that I showed him my press credentials.

    HANNITY: Yes.

MCCORMACK: Because there’s no reason that a private citizen in the United States of America.

HANNITY: That part right here. By the way, I want to just — this is the part where you’re holding up your credentials. He’s obviously getting in your face. He’s being overly aggressive. And then, you know, you obviously have the right to walk on a street, don’t you?

MCCORMACK: Yes, I mean, any citizen has the right to walk on the streets — public streets in Washington, D.C. and approach a candidate running for elective office.

    HANNITY: Yes.

MCCORMACK: The question — the candidate has the right not to answer. And reporters have a right to repeat their questions. I’ve spoken to Coakley before and she answered some of my questions.

HANNITY: Let me ask you this. Last question because we’re running out of time. And you only wanted to ask about her comment that all terrorists have left Afghanistan, which is absurd. And I think it should be asked so it’s a good question.

But Coakley said she’s not privy to the facts surrounding the incident. Now we have that picture where she’s looking right at you on the ground. Is that disingenuous?

MCCORMACK: I mean, she could have easily asked any — the operative who was working on her campaign what happened. She was walking a little bit ahead of me. And she heard the clanking and she turned around when she saw that, I believe.

Again, I was on the ground so I don’t know exactly which way she was looking when the push happened. I assume she was looking forward though. So I don’t know, if she wanted to find out then I would have been happy to — she’s more than welcome to interview me and maybe I can interview her and we could find out the truth.

HANNITY: Well, I think the answer to the question if all terrorists have left Afghanistan is a good one.

John McCormack, thanks for being with us.

    MCCORMACK: Thank you, Sean.

It puts into perspective the very real threat of a nuclear weapon being detonated in Washington DC and the subsequent decapitation of our Government.

I think this program will benefit us all as we stand together and blog not only for our personal freedoms but our very safety.

This threat is far more serious than I had ever known before.

That is likely why Marphy Croakley has not heard back from Obami-wan. He doesn’t want to face stumping for another blue state loser and have a third one added to his string of stumping failures as president. Presently he is 0 for 2

He knows a lost cause when he sees one.
    COME ON OBAMA!
    STUMP FOR CROAKLEY!
    I TRIPLE DOG DARE YA!

Geithner to Testify on Secretive Bailout Deals

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is set to testify before a House probe into his role in deals that sent billions of bailout dollars to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and other big banks.

Staffers for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform say Geithner is confirmed to appear at a hearing Jan. 27 on the bailout of American International Group Inc.

The committee wants to know why the Federal Reserve Bank of New York paid banks to cancel their contracts with AIG and didn’t demand concessions. The deals might have cost taxpayers billions more than necessary.

An earlier watchdog report said Geithner approved the decisions as president of the New York Fed.

The staffers spoke anonymously because they are not authorized to discuss Geithner’s plans.

Officials: ‘Credible Intelligence’ on Terror Attack Planning Against U.S.

Credible intelligence has emerged that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is plotting another attack against the United States and U.S. interests abroad, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official confirmed to Fox News on Thursday.

Credible intelligence has emerged that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is plotting another attack against the United States and U.S. interests abroad, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official confirmed to Fox News on Thursday.

The intelligence is described as not specific about time, place or method of attack, but is being taken seriously, according to this official.

The new information does not come from 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who allegedly tried to bring down flight 253 on Christmas Day.

According to those familiar with the intelligence, the strategic threat from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, based in Yemen, has intensified and the group is emboldened by the failed Dec. 25 plot.

“The threat did not end on Christmas Day”, according to one source familiar with the intelligence.

Al Qaeda in Yemen and the Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, known as Al Shabaab — translated as Mujahadeen Youth — are described as having “shared interests and shared goals.”

U.S. counterterrorism officials say clear connections now can be traced between the two terrorist groups and they are not ruling out the possibility that they are working together to attack U.S. interests.

U.S. officials also remain concerned about two dozen Somali Americans who disappeared into the Al Shabaab training camps in Somalia in the last 18 months. Their American passports would allow them to reenter the United States.

Federal authorities have information about “certain people” they are tracking, but officials would not be more specific. A U.S. counterterrorism source said authorities believe the 20 or so operatives Abdulmutallab referred to in his questioning by the FBI would not necessarily fit the same profile as the Nigerian suspect.

In addition, American cleric Anwar al-Awaki, now living in Yemen, “has moved up the terrorist supply chain,” according to officials. He is now a facilitator, recruiter and operational planner.

Al-Awlaki’s ascent is due to his growing confidence and ability to “spot talent” as he apparently did with Abdulmutullab. It is not due to a “leadership vacuum” within the group, officials said.

“In a lengthy academic paper, President Obama’s regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein, argued the U.S. government should ban “conspiracy theorizing.”

Among the beliefs Sunstein would ban is advocating that the theory of global warming is a deliberate fraud.

Sunstein also recommended the government send agents to infiltrate “extremists who supply conspiracy theories” to disrupt the efforts of the “extremists” to propagate their theories.

In a 2008 Harvard law paper, “Conspiracy Theories,” Sunstein and co-author Adrian Vermeule, a Harvard law professor, ask, “What can government do about conspiracy theories?”

“We can readily imagine a series of possible responses. (1) Government might ban conspiracy theorizing. (2) Government might impose some kind of tax, financial or otherwise, on those who disseminate such theories.”
