Our smile muscles ache in sympathy.
You will be comforted to know that the gracious FLOTUS feels your pain for her pain. “As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days,” the first lady told a group of fellow Chicago 2016 boosters, “so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home.” Translation: Thank me, thank you, for all we do.
Never has self-congratulatory gratitude been raised to such an art form, but there was no time for loyal subjects to dwell. The selflessly indefatigable Michelle Obama had to rush off for an 800-meter wine-and-cheese dash with International Olympic Committee members, followed by a rigorous aerobic Heads of State luncheon hosted by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and another high-heeled trek to the IOC Opening Ceremony at the Copenhagen Opera House.
Of course, it’s not entirely clear which “people” out there are saying that the Obamas’ jaunt to Denmark is a “sacrifice.”
Certainly not the families of the 43 American soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have died in Afghanistan since Gen. Stanley McChrystal called for more reinforcements.
Certainly not the families of the nearly 40 children and teens in Chicago who lost their lives on the out-of-control streets of the Windy City so far this year.
The first lady’s slip of self-absorption reminds me of a useful passage in Washington Post writer Liza Mundy’s biography of Mrs. Obama. After graduating from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, the bitterly oppressed Michelle Obama headed back to her native Chicago to join the high-powered law firm of Sidley Austin — the ninth largest in the world. There, Mundy’s book reported, the future first lady griped about having to do the duties of a second-year associate while she was a second-year associate — demonstrating the trademark attitude of entitlement and inflated ego that led the law partner who recruited her to later describe her as “perennially dissatisfied.”
Doing her first job was a burden then. Enjoying the perks of her current job is a “sacrifice” now.
Michelle Obama has a gift for selling special-interest business-as-usual as public-interest charity. Thus, the insatiable appetite of Chicago’s polite elite for a massive Olympics windfall to crony developers is redefined as a do-good campaign for the children. Said Mrs. Obama:
“We need all of our children to be exposed to the Olympic ideals that athletes from around the world represent, particularly this time in our nation’s history, where athletics is becoming more of a fleeting opportunity. … When we’re seeing rates of childhood obesity increase, it is so important for us to raise up the platform of fitness and competition and fair play; to teach kids to cheer on the victors and empathize with those in defeat, but most importantly, to recognize that all the hard work that is required to do something special.”
“Hard work,” you know, like jetting off with your gal pals to schmooze other world leaders, famous athletes and celebrities for a few days on the taxpayers’ dime.

I don’t teach my children that apology = failure. I was constantly disappointed that Bush wouldn’t apologize for *anything* or admit to any mistakes. I’m not ashamed of my Country for a second, but I do not have a problem saying we’ve been wrong a few times. And I just don’t think Obama’s brand of gov’t is evil Socialism. He may want more gov’t than many of us, but honestly so did Bush.

FOX News Poll: Opposition to Health Care Reform Grows
A majority of Americans oppose current health care legislation and think the plans being considered cost too much, give too much power to Washington and take decisions away from them and their doctors.
As Congress takes action on health care reform, public opinion on the issue remains divided and, at times, contradictory. The latest FOX News poll shows a decline in support for health care reform over the past two weeks.
Currently, one-third favors the legislation being considered (33 percent) and a slight majority (53 percent) opposes it. This compares to 38 percent favoring and 48 percent opposing the legislation two weeks ago (15-16 September 2009).
Americans are split along party lines in their support of health reform. A majority of Democrats favors the legislation (60 percent) while a large majority of Republicans opposes it (85 percent). Independents, an important swing group, are more likely to oppose health reform than favor it (57 percent oppose and 27 percent favor).
The poll was conducted by Opinion Dynamics Corp. from September 29 to September 30 for FOX News among 900 registered voters. The poll has a 3-point error margin.
Americans’ beliefs about what would happen if health care reform legislation were to pass sheds light on why opposition may be growing. Majorities agree the plans being considered cost too much money (62 percent), give too much power to Washington (60 percent) and take decision-making away from them and their doctor (54 percent).
This last number is particularly important. The failure of President Clinton’s attempt at health care reform is often attributed to the public’s belief that it would lead to a loss of personal control over health care decisions.
However, while Americans are concerned about what will happen to their own health care if reform passes, they are also concerned about what will happen to others if reform does not pass. Three out of four are concerned that Congress will pass reform legislation that is bad for them and their family (49 percent very concerned and 25 percent somewhat concerned).
At the same time, a large majority (70 percent) is concerned that if Congress fails to pass health reform, many Americans will be left without insurance (41 percent very concerned and 29 percent somewhat concerned).
A majority of Americans are also willing to pay more for their health insurance in order to provide insurance for all Americans (60 percent). Just over one in three would pay $100 more per year (35 percent), while about one in five would pay $500 or more (25 percent). One-third of Americans (33 percent) volunteer the fact that they would pay nothing extra.

We tend to see things in black and white as concerning issues ( Not Race) and so it is abundantly clear through and through that Obama is clearly a Socialist/Marxist with all the associations that go along with his ideals for America.

I guess I can see the red flag there (though I disagree that healthcare will lead to gulags), but lots of government-provided services are bricks in that arch, things we have in this country and depend on every day. And yet we are not communist. Nor will we ever be no matter how many people would wish it so…for the record I just don’t see Obama wanting that. It doesn’t jive with all the accounts I’ve read of his dealings with Big Pharma.

Good question. I feel I am a lone conservative because the conservatism I grew into and believed in was more American than Republican and had a diginity and an educated no-b.s. approach to most everything. It was intellectually honest and fought in the arena of ideas and wasn’t hampered by what someone else thought or said about it. Today conservatism seems to have lost a lot of that, and I’m trying to understand why I see so many former conservatives acting what I thought was liberal behavior. Indeed, many are embracing political guerilla tactics out of the 60s handbook, you even celebrate it. And I suppose it’s to be expected with the gradual shift in power and demographic, and every person is different, but much of it still bothers me.
I spend a fair amount of time reading a mostly liberal message board (where I am often cursed as being too moderate, as well) and have until today not found an open conservative forum, so thank you very much to VF for letting me post comments. There are many other points being brought up that I’d love to debate when they come up in future posts, but I have an appointment to get to. I admit that I am probably further left than anyone that has posted today on the topics discussed but would appreciate the opportunity to join in the conversation in the future.

I am also using Foxfire with little problems concerning videos. Sometimes they are choppy or the sound is chopped up but other than that it is ok and load up just fine.

(CNN) — Whenever President Obama has traveled overseas and offered pointed and direct assessments of the United States, some of them critical, Republicans have ripped him for criticizing America, saying a president should always defend the United States.
So I want to hear the explanation by these so-called patriots of their giddy behavior over the United States losing the 2016 Olympic Games.
Yes, the United States. The bid that was rejected Friday by the International Olympic Committee was not a Chicago, Illinois, bid. It was the official bid submitted by the United States Olympic Committee and was representative of the nation. Tokyo’s bid was that of Japan; Madrid’s was that of Spain; and Rio de Janeiro’s was that of Brazil.
Republicans want to spin the decision as a massive loss by President Obama and the Democrats who have always controlled Chicago politics.
“Hahahahaha,” wrote Erick Erickson on the conservative “RedState” blog, “I thought the world would love us more now that Bush was gone.”
What the critics don’t see is that Obama’s loss on the Olympics is America’s loss. Any red-blooded American who loves to see the American flag raised and the national anthem played when one of our own wins a gold medal should blast the Republicans’ giddiness over the loss.
I can recall crying along with millions of Americans when our hockey team beat the Russians and won the hockey gold in 1980. Where were those games? Lake Placid, New York. Euphoria spread all across the nation, not only because we beat the mighty Russians, but also because it took place on American soil.
When Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton dominated the 1984 Olympic Games, we all beamed with pride because they represented the United States on American soil in Los Angeles, California.
And when Michael Johnson stormed around the track to obliterate the world record in the 200-meter dash (since broken by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt), we relished the win as he took a victory lap around the stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Americans love home field advantage, and we always desire to show the rest of the world what we are made of.
I don’t care if Republicans want to rip President Obama over going to Copenhagen, Denmark, to pitch for the games. This isn’t about politics. It’s not about ideology. This is about America. OUR pride. Our chance to shine. Our loss of the games.
So, to all the critics happy about us losing the 2016 games, turn in your flag lapel pins and stop boasting of being so patriotic. When an American city loses, like New York did in the the last go-round, we all lose. And all you critics are on the same level as the America haters all across the world.

Olympics loss forces Chicago to rethink city plans
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s dream of an Olympics-sized stimulus was dashed when the 2016 Summer Games were awarded to Rio de Janeiro, and the loss amounts to more than a bruised ego for the nation’s third-largest city.
Officials can no longer trumpet the $13.7 billion citywide economic impact local Olympics organizers estimated would come of games-related jobs, construction, tourism and transportation. They’ll also have no excuse for distraction in a city grappling with a mounting deficit and violence that has led to dozens of deaths of city teens each year.

The loss marked a stunning defeat for Mayor Richard M. Daley, who spent three years working to sell Chicago residents on the games, often highlighting job creation and a financial influx that would help the city emerge from a recessional slump.
“I just know so many construction workers who thought their next seven years were going to be full of work,” said Jane Zefran, 63, a semi-retired Chicago resident. “Now, heavens only knows what will happen. It’s such a shame.”
People around town seem doubtful the loss will scar Daley as he mulls whether to seek a seventh term in 2011 — at which point he will have 22 years in office and become Chicago’s longest-serving mayor.
“I don’t think he will be looked at like a loser,” said Angela Byrd, 40, a teacher’s assistant from Chicago.
Still, a recent Chicago Tribune/WGN poll showed Daley’s approval rating had sunk to 35% in part because of skepticism over the Olympics and an unpopular deal to lease city parking meters to a private contractor. And the mayor was in Copenhagen as an unwelcome spotlight again shone on his city after a 16-year-old honors student was beaten to death while walking to a bus stop after school.
Back at home, one of the first big issues the mayor will have to deal with comes Wednesday, when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan meet with school officials, students and residents to talk about chronic school violence.
Daley is likely to be asked yet again what can be done to address the issue.
As for jobs, at least some of the anticipated construction still should materialize because the city has pledged to move forward with redeveloping the site that would have been the Olympic Village. The plan calls for transforming the site of a shuttered South Side hospital complex into a mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood. City contracts already are out for some demolition work and the city plans to sell the land to private developers.
But without the games, many improvements to infrastructure, like public transportation, won’t see the speed-up of federal assistance the city expected if were it chosen.
“Unfortunately, not having the bid means that many of those projects will take much longer to complete, but they are still on the table and we will move forward,” said Chicago Alderman Brendan Reilly.
Advocates hoped the Olympics would provide the leverage needed in lobbying for funds to overhaul aging transportation systems that support trains on old tracks and crowded roads that need work.
“It doesn’t diminish the need to figure out how to fund this stuff, but it is disappointing,” said Barry Matchett of the Chicago-based advocacy group Environmental Law & Policy Center.
The Chicago Transit Authority’s elevated subway system is perhaps the most troubled. Some of the worst track has been recently fixed, partly drawing on federal stimulus funds. But some stretches of the more than 240 mile-network remain so shoddy that trains meant to travel more than 50 mph must slow to the pace of a horse at trot.
Chicago’s Metra commuter trains are better off, but hardly trouble free. The International Olympic Committee’s evaluation report had singled out Metra, saying it would be hard-pressed to handle what would be more than double the peak commuter traffic during the games.
Alderman Tom Tunney said the city must move on quickly and refocus efforts on other growth areas like green technology, manufacturing and its reputation as the country’s freight rail hub.
“In this economy there is no time for sulking. No, no, no, no, no,” he said.

For us to devolve into a discussion about a person accurately labeled a perv is to dishonor all of the many good men who are dying in Afghanistan. His has put his son’s life in an untenable place along with its mother and with his own mother. He has betrayed and used all women. There is nothing to say about a man who long ago sold his soul.

If you really want to see patriotism of an athlete, remember Pele of Brazil. I remember in the 1970’s, in Karlsruhe Germany army folks watched him at a soccer match. Pele ran a circle around the ENTIRE field with the Brazilian flag & he went back to lead his team into the field still carrying his country’s flag. You can tell by his posture of how proud he was of his country.
Folks (non-Brazilian) in the stands stood up to applaud. It was a sight to see.

CHICAGO — The funeral of a Chicago teen who was beaten to death on his way home from school drew civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan on Saturday, both calling for an end to youth violence.
Farrakhan said he came to the funeral because he was “deeply pained” by the death of 16-year-old honor roll student Derrion Albert. The boy was walking to a bus stop after school when a group of teens attacked him during a street fight late last month.
“Naturally, we wonder why such a beautiful life? Such a future we thought was waiting for this young man,” Farrakhan said. “This was a special young man of righteous bearing who God took from us so young.”
Cell phone video footage shows Albert being kicked and hit with splintered railroad ties. Four teens are charged in his death.
President Barack Obama is sending U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who once led Chicago Public Schools, to Chicago on Wednesday to meet with school officials, students and residents and talk about school violence.
“The eyes of the world are watching,” Pastor E.F. Ledbetter Jr. told mourners at the Greater Mount Hebron Baptist Church on the city’s South Side. “This has affected people all over the globe.”
Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis and Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman also both attended the funeral along with other city and public officials. Huberman called the Christian Fenger Academy High School sophomore a “bright light.”
Jackson demanded children and teens to be given safe passage to and from school.
“Derrion didn’t have to die,” Jackson said. “He was murdered. His pain, his suffering, his death have shook the world.”
As mourners filed into the church, video screens scrolled through pictures of Derrion as a baby and with his family, as well as photos of his academic awards. Some mourners wore T-shirts with Derrion’s picture that read “We will always remember you.”
The program included a poem Derrion’s mother, Janette Albert, wrote to her son titled “May I Go Now?”
