Breaking: Rangel suspends Ways and Means posts

Well… it was only a matter of time till Nancy Pelosi was forced to blink on her refusal to deal with the corruption of Charlie Rangel. I suspect the final straw was the Congressional Black Caucus member who, yesterday, called for Rangel to step down. The DEM-on-DEM heat was greater than Pelosi could bear.

This special interest funded trip to the Caribbean for which Rangel has been officially censured is the least of Rangel’s hanging problems. Not paying taxes is going to hang him… when the Ethics Committee finally finds they can no longer cover for him with delays.

From the Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON—Rep. Charles Rangel said he is temporarily stepping aside as the chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee.

In a brief, televised statement Wednesday, Mr. Rangel said he asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for a “leave of absence” as chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee. “From the beginning I have offered this to Speaker Pelosi,” he said.

Mr. Rangel, a New York Democrat, has been battling a series of ethics charges in recent months. Last week, the House ethics committee found he broke congressional rules by not properly disclosing trips to the Caribbean that were paid for by companies.

With Democratic opposition on the rise, Mr. Rangel met late Tuesday with senior House Democrats, including Ms. Pelosi. The party leaders told Mr. Rangel they didn’t think he had enough votes to survive a vote on the House floor, according to an aide.

In the meeting, Mr. Rangel refused to quit as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and instead said he’d think overnight about the matter before deciding whether to step down or face an uncertain vote.

After the one-hour meeting broke, Mr. Rangel told reporters he would stay on.

“You bet your life,” he said. Pressed further, Mr. Rangel, raising his voice, said emphatically: “Yes, and I don’t lie to the press.” Ms. Pelosi’s office declined to comment.

The defections stem from the party’s fear that it can’t continue to defend even a powerful lawmaker in such a volatile political climate without paying a price. Democrats are facing the prospect of losses in the year’s midterms, and even loss of control of one or both chambers.

“I think we’re in a zero-tolerance atmosphere, and I think…Washington should be held to the highest ethical standards,” said Rep. Paul Hodes, (D., N.H.), who is running for the Senate. “I have the greatest admiration for Mr. Rangel’s service to this country. He’s been a great public servant. This is very, very unfortunate, but I think it’s necessary.”

okay, I was actually only commenting on the way they present the news or their use of technology. I guess I’ve seen way too many technical glitches on FOX. They happen, but it seems to happen more on FOX, imo.

I agree that CNN news is biased. You bring up valid points m2. It’s important to get news from a variety of sources to avoid being brainwashed. People who watch FOX exclusively start to sound like howdy doody after a while.

  7. samiam60 says:

I think the word Professional would apply if CNN actually reported all the news and the Whole Story when they do report on a story. The leftist slant at CNN is overwelming and rarely will you see them allow a Conservative point of View.

Fox does allow Liberals on their talk panels.

  8. samiam60 says:

Looks like Pelosi had to Wrangle the Rangle.

  9. samhenry says:

I’m so tired of these dramatic performances in at the last moment trying for an Academy Award. Rangel is a crook and a low life. Somebody put the man away somewhere and take away his mic. He should not have been allowed to be front and center at the Health Care Summit – was that held in Copenhagen? I am confused. Barack never attends a summit unless he can fly there.

  10. Foxwood says:

Howdy! Doody! I agree that FOX has alot of glitches. That is one of the things I like about them. Especially when they make lite of it.

  11. samiam60 says:

    Rose,

Sounds like your Son is now allowing you to watch Fox News? If so that’s a start. I am wondering how long you have been watching Fox now and how you are able to form such an opinion. Just curious is all.

I won’t be on much until this afternoon. My new computer is having problems. It is just off warranty so I have called my tech group at a cost of millions. They should be here at 1:00. I am on my backup computer. Wow, all the world needs a backup computer. I would be going nuts by now.

  13. rosehips says:

FOX “allows” liberals on their panels who are willing to be a punching bag for money. They hire pathetic people who take abuse and probably laugh all the way to the bank. They are little more than cheap whores. But believe me when I say that if they offered me the job, and a six figure income, I’d jump at it, I would. lol

I’ve seen the panels on Anderson, and those liberals are uncouth animals compared to the respectful panel of Special Report.

Ok guys- here is my example.
This is a paragraph reporting details behind the “admonishment” of Rangel from Fox News. The report covers the whole breaking news, and informs the reader of the backstory with this paragraph. Now read carefully:

“The House ethics committee issued Rangel a formal “admonishment” last Thursday for accepting donations from a private corporation to pay for two trips to Caribbean. The ethics panel has not yet weighed in on a host of other probes it launched into the congressman’s conduct starting in 2008. Those ethics complaints include his failure to pay taxes on a villa in the Dominican Republic, his use of congressional stationary to help raise money for City College of New York and his improper storage of a broken-down Mercedes Benz in a House garage.”

  45. m2 says:

This is the reporting on “admonishment” by CNN. Notice how they leave out the bulk of Rangels history corruption and only lead the reader to think he (among others) did “one” wrong which may or may not be an “aides fault”…

  48. rosehips says:

m2, this was in the cnn report. I think they cover some of the things but not all that you mention.

CNN: Rangel is being investigated for, among other things, failing to pay taxes on a home in the Dominican Republic. The congressman also has admitted failing to report several hundred thousand dollars in assets on federal disclosure forms.

In addition, he is under scrutiny for the purported misuse of a rent-controlled apartment for political purposes, as well as for allegedly preserving tax benefits for an oil-drilling company in exchange for donations to a project he supported at the City College of New York.

Rangel was formally admonished Friday by the House ethics committee for violating rules on receiving gifts. Specifically, the committee found that Rangel violated House gift rules by accepting reimbursement payments for travel to conferences in the Caribbean in 2007 and 2008.

Rangel’s staff, according to the committee, knew that corporations had given money to the Carib News, which sponsored the events. That fact had not been divulged to the ethics committee when Rangel asked for and received approval to attend the trips, according to the committee’s report. The committee found that while Rangel did not know about the contributions, he was nevertheless responsible.

  50. m2 says:

Here is a same report on the “admonishment”, as CNN.

Notice the unbiased presentation, and very imp detail in the last paragraph. You just don’t get this type of hard news with objectivity and detail from CNN.

  52. Foxwood says:

FOX has been reporting on Rangel now for over a year. How long has CNN been reporting it? I bet they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to report it.

  53. m2 says:

I just feel CNN was really under-reporting the details in a non succinct way and heavily biased. I also feel their writing style is more like college level prose instead of journalistic hitting of facts.

True however, you can pull out the precious charges, but they hide them in such a blanket context of bias!

I guess I just am not a CNN fan. I find their news reporting style bloviated and biased.

I’d rather get it straight from MSNBC.

foxy, here’s a CNN article from Sept 2008

    updated 11:59 a.m. EDT, Wed September 10, 2008

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Wednesday he will not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee in the face of a call from the Republican leader in the House for him to do so.

Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic.

He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and he will pay whatever back taxes he owes. He said the income had gone directly toward paying down the mortgage on the property and he had rarely if ever received income statements related to it.

  59. m2 says:

Yeah maybe on that that boring as molassess story about the republican in Alaska that was found not guilty. I remember CNN spent every day and hour highlighting and reporting that in 2007, 2008. Even as Obama was lying about ACORN, Ayers, Wright, where he met Michelle, his past etc etc.

  60. Foxwood says:

  63. m2 says:

The difference is, fox news.com reports the facts as they happen. They don’t withhold (like CNN), or make a bigger story than is (like CNN) to avoid other news stories.

Did CNN ever report Van Jones as it was happening?

No just 2 days later and just that “repubs are mad because he called them assholes”… The real story in all of tha was not name-calling or Truther. It was that Van Jones is a self identified Communist.

(as I am sure many of Pbama’s people are)…
But CNN, NYT et al did not want that nugget to get out into the public dialogue!

  64. rosehips says:

foxy, lol. did I try to prove I watch a lot of FOX? haha shame on me if I did. I don’t watch that much FOX. I find it is targeting a different demographic than me. ;)

That statement proves you don’t watch it.

  71. m2 says:

Ok on my CNN homepage features stories (meaning large in front with photos), Iraq and Chile.

On my Fox page featured with pics, Rangel and Reconcilliation.

CNN’s turner admits in the past they don’t want to focus on the salacious scandal of the administration. Well of course. After all the millions he pumped into Obama, he wants a return on his investment.

  72. rosehips says:

ah foxy. if only you could convince me to stick exclusively to FOX, Glen, Rush, and why not throw in the Washington Times? You would have another devoted fan of the delusional right to agree with all your warped ideas. wouldn’t that be sumpthin?

  73. rosehips says:

exactly m2. If I want salicious stories I’ll watch FOX or go to fox.com

  74. Foxwood says:

“The news is all biased. But I still contend that FOX is biased as much as any of them.”

    You prove with each statement.

  75. m2 says:

Well girl, if bias is called reporting on the actions of the Obama admininistration in objective way… I guess Fox is biased because that’s what they do. Other stations (CNN) spend more time on world politics and soft stories rather than tell Americans what is occuring by their government.

Just watch Special Report with Brett Baer at 6 I guess it’s the same hour for you, and I will watch an hour of CNN that you choose!

  76. Foxwood says:

“if only you could convince me to stick exclusively to FOX”

I’m not trying to convince you of anything. I’m just pointing out your statements that prove you don’t know what your talking about.

  77. m2 says:

Rose, tell me a good hour to watch. I’ll check the blog back later… I have to leave now! Because I will get blocked in… Just let me know a good hour of CNN reporting so I can see what they talk about.

You and I both know more details of things because like you said, we read a variety of sources, so I am interested to see what details are comprehensively reported.

  78. m2 says:

I have to go, everyone have a good day :)

  79. rosehips says:

m2, c’mon girl. does it look like I am advocating for CNN? I thought you’d recognize that I am not. I find them more professional but not more objective. I don’t watch it regularly. I do turn it on if I want to find breaking news. I don’t have any commentator on there that I am a fan of. Except Richard Lui but he I don’t watch him either. I just think he’s cute and he loved my snow vid so much last winter that he said so twice. I especially do NOT like Betty Ngyen, but y’all know that already (the bitch! haha).

  80. Foxwood says:

I’ll admit I don’t watch CNN and I was wrong on my statement that CNN was drug kicking a screaming. I don’t watch CNN. I don’t watch Liberal biased bullsh!t either, therefor.

  82. m2 says:

No no! (and I haven’t left just yet), my point was not to make you feel you are CNN’s advocate, but Im obvs. an advocate for FOX, and I wanted it to be fair that if I convince you to watch something I believe in that there must be an hour on some station (CNN) that you believe in. I was just joining in on the experiment.

I totally believe in Special Report!

So if you have any news that you believe is just objective, let me know.

    Ok better go…
