LUFKIN, Texas — A hospital spokeswoman says former Rep. Charlie Wilson of Texas has died at the age of 76.
The spokeswoman says Wilson died Wednesday of cardiopulmonary arrest.
Wilson represented Texas’ 2nd District in the House from 1973 to 1996 and was nicknamed “Good Time Charlie” for his partying ways.
He was portrayed in the 2007 movie “Charlie Wilson’s War,” which chronicled Wilson’s efforts to arm Afghani mujahedeen, then called “freedom fighters,” during Afghanistan’s war against the Soviet Union in 1980s.
Sad when anyone passes away. RIP Charlie, you will be missed.

As scientists come closer to completing a draft sequence of the Neanderthal genome, creating a living person from an ancient DNA sequence is becoming a real possibility, claims Archaeology Magazine.
As scientists come closer to completing a draft sequence of the Neanderthal genome, creating a living person from an ancient DNA sequence is becoming a real possibility, according to Archaeology Magazine.
In 2005, 454 Life Sciences began a project with the Max Planck Institute to sequence the genetic code of a 30,000 year old Neanderthal woman. Now nearly complete, the sequence will let scientists look at the genetic blueprint of humankind’s nearest relative, understand its biology and maybe even create a living person.
The work is possible today thanks to vast increases in computing power over the past few years. 454′s Thomas Jarvie told the magazine, “Six years ago if you wanted to sequence E. coli… it would have taken one or maybe two million dollars, and it would have taken a year and 150 people. Nowadays, one person can do it in two days.”
The restoration of DNA tens of thousands of years old has been challenged by chemical changes, breakdown of the biological matter and contaminants. And once the DNA sequencing is complete, creating a clone from it is still an inexact science.
Some scientists believe that by making changes to the DNA inside a human cell — thousands or even millions of changes, that is — the human genome can be altered to match the recreated Neanderthal one. One cell is just a step towards a living creature, but it’s a key one.
Advances in stem cell science have led to proposals to alter a stem cell’s DNA to match the Neanderthal genome. That stem cell would be left to reproduce, creating a colony of cells that could be programmed to become any type of cell that existed in the Neanderthal’s body — even an entire person. Archaeology cites Robert Lanza, biotech firm Advanced Cell Technology’s chief science officer, who notes that species such as cows and goats are now routinely cloned with few problems.
There are many technical obstacles, but it’s reasonable to suppose that scientists could soon use that long-extinct genome to safely create a healthy, living Neanderthal clone. But should it be done?
That’s the question that inspired author Zach Zorich to dig into the issue. He points out that legal precedents are on the side of Neanderthal human rights, noting that such a creature would deserve human rights.
“I’ve been following Neanderthal gene research for years, and it started to dawn on me that all of these decades-old academic questions about how Neanderthals were related to modern humans might suddenly have human rights implications,” he told FoxNews.com.
“My hope is that the article will get people to think about what it is that makes us human beings so that there is a larger and better informed debate about how our society should proceed with cloning genetics research.”

Time for Obama to go ‘gangsta’ on GOP

(CNN) — Civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer made famous the phrase, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
For me, I’m sick and tired of Democrats having power and being unwilling to use it. I’ve always respected Republicans when they had power because they were willing to use it and maybe apologize later.
Today, President Obama walked into the White House briefing room and took some questions, and one of them revolved around recess appointments.
He has watched Republicans block many of his appointments, and now he says he made it clear to them that he will “consider” making some when the U.S. Senate goes into recess.
“One senator, as you all are aware, had put a hold on every single nominee that we had put forward due to a dispute over a couple of earmarks in his state,” President Obama said.
“In our meeting, I asked the congressional leadership to put a stop to these holds in which nominees for critical jobs are denied a vote for months. Surely we can set aside partisanship and do what’s traditionally been done to confirm these nominations.
If the Senate does not act — and I made this very clear — if the Senate does not act to confirm these nominees, I will consider making several recess appointments during the upcoming recess, because we can’t afford to allow politics to stand in the way of a well-functioning government.”
This is where the president needs to show his toughness and just do it. Forget the threats. The actions of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, and other Republican obstructionists will continue if President Obama allows them to run roughshod over him. When you’re the top dog, you do what you have to do to govern. Allowing Republican senators to continue to deny your appointments is nonsense.
If all of them choose to support a filibuster, then you take it to the American people and show the obstructionists for what they are. You get your grass-roots movement fired up to stand up and do something. The political right used its base to go after Democrats who blocked appointments to the federal bench and other positions. So why not be just as aggressive?
If there are members of your own party who stand in the way, such as Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska, then you also blast them and make them pay for acting so foolishly.
This president got rolled by the Senate over health care. His team made some boneheaded mistakes, and now they are paying for them. Continuing to play footsie with opponents will only get him into more trouble. He should set a deadline to have his folks confirmed. If not, appoint them all during the recess and go on about your business.
Obama’s critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Channel your inner Al Capone and go gangsta against your foes. Let ‘em know that if they aren’t with you, they are against you, and will pay the price.
Reagan would have made them a nuclear nation if he were still around.
Martin obviously is a political idiot and if Obama goes too far further political destruction of the DEM Party is assured.
These asshats don’t want to get it… they want what they want and screw everyone and everything else that gets in their way.
Far as I am concerned, Roland Martin just Jumped The Shark and has further tarnished CNN’s crumbling reputation as the Media Arm of the Communist Party.
