I remember the winter of 83 in NYC when it started snowing around noon on a friday. I got sent home from work early and my bf and I went out for drinks with some friends in Manhattan where we worked. We took the F train home around dark thirty and we ended up getting the very last train to Brooklyn that night. The next day was a sight to behold. The city was pretty much shut down. My only regret was that it happened on a Sat and not during the week when we would have gotten a day off work. haha I bet wall st was glad.

Pelosi told the President he was the worst since Herbert Hoover on jobs adding, “Job losses are taking a real toll on the financial security of American families” while noting that “while the national unemployment rate dropped slightly, it still stands at a near record high.” Only one problem: these were Pelosi’s words to President Bush in 2003. Ooops.

belle, I know. there is a lot of waste in both gov’t and corps (in this case the p is hard).
I don’t think that taxpayers should be footing bills for luxury accomodations. Also, there is a lot of waste in transportation costs to conferences. Many of the conferences could actually take place electronically. Technology is amazing and virtual conferences could be more common in the future.
Alternatively, why not put the teachers in dorms during times when they are empty and hold conferences on college campuses. That would be cheaper than luxury hotels with spas.

Sen. John McCain has criticized the Census Bureau for buying ad time on Sunday’s Super Bowl — an event well known for its staggering advertising costs.
“While the census is very important to AZ, we shouldn’t be wasting $2.5 million taxpayer dollars to compete with ads for Doritos!” the Arizona Republican wrote via Twitter.
He also said: “The census happens every 10 years. Everybody knows it happens.” The outlay, he added, “is shameful.”

foxy,re: why still national emergency? my guess is the threat by Iran. Although my gut says an attack on Israel is imminent (and we all know my gut is often wrong) there is something brewing within our borders that our gov’t has been vaguely warning us about. Next they will alert us that something is really up and to report all suspicious activity. We must be vigilant. The terrorists could literally be your neighbors. I told you that about the raid in my apt in Brooklyn after the first wtc bombing. I wasn’t living there then, but I could have been.
There is a real threat to our country and something is brewing. We’ve been warned that a threat is imminent within 6 mos. We should all be prepared. I’m scared sh!tless, personally.

VF, I will try to be gentle here. I really don’t want to beat up on Gov. Palin. But she is being raked over the coals for her “double-standard” regarding the use of the term “retard”. Arianna Huffington is calling her out for being a hypocrite because she won’t criticize Rush for using the same term.
CNN is just waiting to pounce on the gov when she addresses the tp convention. I really am not looking forward to the skewer, but I think you are listening too much to the blogging pundits who sometimes spin things to look better than they actually are. Sarah is a target and she continues to be battered. In the past two days I read about her not paying taxes on cabins in Alaska and today it’s revealed that Todd acted as an advisor for her during her 2.5 yr truncated term as governor. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with her demanding $100,000 to speak at the convention. That still leaves the tea party people with over $250,000, if my math is correct. That should be enough for expenses and then some, hopefully. But maybe not. People criticize the cost for the convention but you are talking about a weekend with workshops, food, accomodations, Sarah Palin, and Nashville! Hey, $500 and something really isn’t that much if it includes lodging. I don’t know if it does.
dang, am I babbling? I really want to say something nice about Sarah to counter my above comments. I’m glad she is gaining respect if that is really true. I’m sure she is learning more and more about foriegn affairs and history so she won’t get attacked.

Memo to Rush Limbaugh: Sarah Palin’s distaste for jerks who use “retard” as an insult goes for right-wing pals like you, too.
The ex-Alaska governor took the talkmeister to task yesterday after he waded into the firestorm over White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s use of the word “retarded” – and promptly committed the same offense.
“Our political correct society is acting like some giant insult’s taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards,” Limbaugh said on his Wednesday show. “I mean these people, these liberal activists are kooks.”
Referring to Emanuel’s later meeting with advocates for the disabled, Limbaugh said there’s going to be “a retard summit at the White House.”
Palin on Monday called for Emanuel to be canned, saying his slamming of liberals in his party as “f—— retarded” was a slur on a par with using the N-word.
She went a little easier on Limbaugh yesterday but still issued a rare rebuke to the conservative radio host, who claimed yesterday he had just been quoting Emanuel.
Said her spokeswoman: “Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”

I would say that Sarah knows Rush is crude and that is what makes him money so it’s ok. Rahm on the other hand is working for the government and his use of the term is unacceptable. However, calling for his firing is way extreme, imo. I think we all need to reflect on our own use of the word. I recall I used it not too long ago, probably on this blog. We all get desensitized sometimes when a word becomes a part of pop culture, in a way. Again, it’s like the phrase “that’s so gay” I hated hearing that at first, but got used to it. I had to. I couldn’t expect people to stop using it.
Sarah Palin is donating all the money from the Tea Party Convention to a political cause. That would be the defeat of the Progressive Socialist Movement in America.
Now lets see, Obama donated 10 thousand dollars to Haiti. That would be like me donating a dollar.
and for the record, I am not in the habit of reading Huffpo, although I should. There are a lot of good articles in it. I just did a search for the gov in the news and that came up. I do get a daily email alert from Huff but only go there on occasion.

He knows not limits nor does he recognize them. A friend was sailing in front of Kerry’s Nantucket cottage when Kerry came speeding across his tack on his little – what do you call those surfboards with a sail)? My friend said and did nothing at that time but when he next saw him in a restaurant, he went up to him and loudly gave it to him for his lack of knowledge of the rules of the sea.

anyhoo, I thank gov Palin for bringing the issue to the headlines. The term “retard” became taboo a long time ago so for people in their 40′s or 50′s, it has not been a common term. mentally disabled, mentally challenged, developmentally delayed, developmentally challenged,
soon “challenged” will be challenged. In my state a bill to change “at-risk” children to “at-hope” children was just stricken before it got to the floor. It is designed to give kids more hope. haha We are so so politically correct out here on the left coast. hahaha

Palin believes Limbaugh’s repeated use of the word “retard” yesterday was “crude and demeaning,” her spokesperson emails.
In the wake of Palin’s demand that Rahm Emanuel be fired for saying the liberal activist strategy on health care was “f–king retarded,” a bunch of people have been asking how she’d react to Limbaugh’s tirade on the air yesterday.
“Our political correct society is acting like some giant insult’s taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards,” Rush said, adding that Rahm’s meeting yesterday with advocates for the mentally handicapped was a “retard summit at the White House.”

It hardly has the passion of her response to Rahm, and there’s no call for him to step down. But given Rush’s stature among conservatives, it’s pretty interesting that she went this far, denouncing his on-air rant as “crude and demeaning name-calling.”
