Boxer Suggests Leaked E-Mails Represent ‘Criminal’ Hacker Conspiracy

    FOXNews.com

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., is calling the leaked e-mails from climate scientists at a British university research unit a “theft” and “crime” that should be investigated, despite calls from Republicans to investigate the contents of the e-mails themselves — not the way they were leaked.

  2. samiam60 says:

One man’s whistleblower is another woman’s criminal hacker.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., is calling the leaked e-mails from climate scientists at a British university research unit a “theft” and “crime” that should be investigated, despite calls from Republicans to investigate the contents of the e-mails themselves, not the way they were leaked.

“You call it Climate-gate. I call it E-mail-theft-gate,” Boxer said at a hearing Wednesday on the Committee on Environment and Public Works, which she chairs. She suggested that a criminal conspiracy might even be at play in bringing the once private e-mails to public light.

Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla, ranking Republican on the panel and a vocal global warming skeptic, has instead called for an intensive review of climate change science in light of the e-mails, which appeared to show scientists discussing the manipulation of climate research. He sent a letter to Boxer Tuesday calling for hearings.

Inhofe spokesman Matt Dempsey said Thursday that his boss continues to believe Congress should be more focused on the scientific data than the conditions of the leak, and suggested Boxer may come around.

“We think that as she looks closer at the e-mails she’ll understand the importance of getting to the bottom of the scandal,” he said. But he added that Republicans were “enthused” by Boxer’s apparent willingness to have hearings.

“She left open the fact that the Senate may have hearings on Climate-gate,” Dempsey said.

Indeed, Boxer acknowledged Wednesday that her panel might examine the scientific side as requested.

“The main issue is, are we facing global warming or are we not? … I’m looking at these e-mails, that have been, even though they were stolen, they are now out in the public,” she said. “We may well have a hearing on this, we may not. We may have a briefing for senators, we may not.”

But she made clear that her focus is going to be on pursuing the hackers.

“This is a crime,” she said, entering into the record the section of criminal code that deals with fraud connected with accessing computers without authorization. “Part of our looking at this will be looking at a criminal activity which could have well been coordinated.”

The e-mails have caused waves ahead of an international conference in Copenhagen on climate change. The director of Britain’s University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, where the e-mails came from, has already stepped down pending an investigation.

Republicans are raising broad questions about the science behind global warming in the aftermath.

“If these e-mails show anything, they show scientists obstructing the scientific process,” Inhofe said Wednesday.

Several Republicans sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency Director Lisa Jackson Wednesday calling for a “thorough and transparent investigation” into the matter.

Sen. John McCain is urging senior citizens to cut up their AARP membership cards and mail the pieces back to the organization, claiming AARP has betrayed them.

Citing AARP’s past opposition to proposed cuts in Medicare, McCain expressed dismay Thursday that the senior group has suddenly changed its position to support $460 billion in cuts to the program proposed by Democrats to help pay for health care legislation.

“Shame on AARP,” McCain, R-Ariz., said Thursday on the Senate floor. “Take your AARP card, cut it in half and send it back. They’ve betrayed you.”

“If we’re talking about Medicare cuts alone as a way of financing health reform, we would fight that with all of our strength,” he added. “We’ve gone as far as we can down that road.”

Democrats throughout Thursday’s Senate debate used AARP’s endorsement of their bill to blunt Republican charges that they are gutting Medicare. AARP rode to the rescue of Democrats on Wednesday, announcing its support for billions in Medicare cuts to help fund the legislation.

As Republicans pressed to restore the cuts, AARP said Democrats merely were recommending elimination of waste and inefficiency within the giant health care program for seniors.

“Most importantly, the legislation does not reduce any guaranteed Medicare benefits,” A. Barry Rand, AARP’s CEO, said in a letter to senators.

Republicans, led by McCain, 73, but not a member of the group, said seniors would lose some of their add-on benefits that are part of coverage under private insurance Medicare. “Above all, we must not use Medicare as a piggy bank” to pay for other programs, he said.

Democrats, sensitive to the charges, rallied behind an alternative proposal by Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., saying the bill would cause no reduction in guaranteed Medicare benefits.

Maxine Waters, D-Calif, reportedly issued a warning Wednesday that the 43 members of the caucus are planning to vote with the GOP to derail a number of Democratic bills if it isn’t addressed.

    HERE WE GO AGAIN

President Obama said at a much-anticipated jobs summit Thursday that chronic unemployment isn’t merely academic and is “a struggle that cuts deep and touches people across the nation.”

The president claimed progress toward an economic recovery while saying much more work needs to be done even as the left-wing of his party accused his administration of not doing enough to increase employment.

Obama is facing an unexpected jolt from liberal Democratic lawmakers, including members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who are unhappy with his administration’s pace of efforts tackling the unemployment rate, which is a whopping 10.2 percent and expected to rise.

The CBC, in particular, say Obama officials have not done enough to address the severe economic problems in the black community. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif, reportedly issued a warning Wednesday that the 43 members of the caucus are planning to vote with the GOP to derail a number of Democratic bills if it isn’t addressed.

Meanwhile, at the White House, Obama sought fresh ideas from the 130 executives, labor leaders who attended.

Obama said the leading question of the day is “how do we get businesses to start hiring again.”

The jobless figure is causing a lot of anxiety for Democratic lawmakers up for re-election in 2010, who realize that if it doesn’t turn around, they too could be out of a job.

Labor support is more in favor of funding labor projects, in terms of public works, putting more money into the states and cities but the White House is concerned about the deficit.

There’s also concern about how the jobless rate will affect the federal deficits, which hit an all time high of $1.42 trillion in the fiscal year that ended in September.

The pressures come from all sides — businesses would like the White House to focus on free trade, Democrats on Capitol Hill on a jobs bill and many in the American public are narrowing in on deficit spending.

Climate e-mail hack ‘will impact on Copenhagen summit’

Climate “sceptics” have claimed that the e-mails undermine the scientific case for climate change being caused by humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions, dubbing the issue “ClimateGate”.

But it has not until now materialised as an issue likely to influence the Copenhagen negotiations, which are supposed to agree a new global deal on combating climate change to supplant the Kyoto Protocol.

Saudi Arabia is an influential member of the G77/China bloc which leads the “developing world” side in many elements of the UN negotiations.

Mr Al-Sabban made clear that he expects it to derail the single biggest objective of the summit – to agree limitations on greenhouse gas emissions.

“It appears from the details of the scandal that there is no relationship whatsoever between human activities and climate change,” he told BBC News.

“Climate is changing for thousands of years, but for natural and not human-induced reasons.

“So, whatever the international community does to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have no effect on the climate’s natural variability.”

Some other countries shared this view, he said; and as a result, governments would not be prepared to countenance agreeing anything that would affect economic growth for many years, until “new evidence” settled the scientific picture.

Rep. Miller Calls For Climategate Investigation

Destruction of raw data to avoid Freedom of Information Act requests was “a criminal act,” says Congresswoman

    Thursday, December 3, 2009

Representative Candice Miller has called for a Congressional investigation into the climategate scandal, saying that the deliberate destruction of data by scientists intimately involved in the UN IPCC in order to avoid FOIA requests was a “criminal act” and blows away the whole foundation for the cap and trade legislation.

Miller made the case that climategate completely undermines the cap and trade legislation passed by Congress earlier this year, which would lead to massive outsourcing of jobs, redistribution of wealth to other countries as well as devastating the economy and states that rely on coal for electricity production, such as Michigan, for whom Miller is a representative.

“If cap and trade were to pass, Michigan’s economy would be devastated, but we were told that it had to happen because the alternative is worse,” said Miller, before discussing climategate, noting that the content of the leaked emails has “blown away the scientific foundation for the man-made global warming theory.”

“These troubling emails show that some of the most respected and quoted and published scientists have used “tricks” to manipulate data, refused to release the data that is the foundation for their research, and they’ve attempted to silence any critics of their hypothesis, and even expressed dismay that they could not explain recent cooling taking place across the globe,” said Miller.

Miller then quoted the most infamous emails including Phil Jones’ “hide the decline” passage and Kevin Trenberth’s email, where he states, “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.” Trenberth was a lead author of the 1995, 2001, and 2007 IPCC Scientific Assessment of Climate Change.

“An inconvenient truth that temperatures were declining required a “trick” to hide it,” noted Miller.

    Speaking on the subject of how the emails expose how warmist scientists engaged in academic witch hunts to prevent studies they disagreed with from appearing in peer-reviewed journals, Miller summarized;

“Call those who disagree with their hypothesis “cranks” because they have not been published in peer-reviewed journals and then when they are – to discredit the journal – in other words Mr. Speaker – the fix is in.”

Miller then highlighted the deliberate destruction of raw climate data on behalf of the CRU scientists and their colleagues.

“The leader of the CRU for years refused to release source data and now they claim that the data was lost – you know it sounds to me like the old elementary excuse – ‘the dog ate my homework’ – that excuse didn’t work for 3rd graders and it’s certainly unacceptable for scientists who are asking us to totally upend our economy,” said Miller.

Speaking on the subject of data that was deliberately destroyed in order to avoid Freedom of Information Act requests, Miller stated, “that is not just bad science, that is a criminal act.”

“Congress needs to hold hearings to this matter, we need to investigate these very troubling revelations – if we are to make policy that will profoundly impact our nation, that policy must be made on facts, not on articles of faith or manipulated data,” concluded Miller.

Watch the video of Miller’s speech below, followed by Senator Inhofe’s comments on climategate made yesterday.

“Google Trends is not updating. It’s been 10 hours since the last update as of this writing.

And that brings up the philosophical question of the Google age — if tons of people are searching for something on the Web and Google Hot Trends doesn’t tell us about it, did the search volume actually occur?

That’s a bit of an exaggeration, of course. But increasingly, it seems, the world is finding out about Google Trends and using it as a way to take the pulse of what people were thinking about in the past hour.

If you see a mysterious term on Google Hot Trends such as “Meredith Baxter Birney,” you immediately know some kind of news or rumor has broken on it. And then you go find out why that person, place or thing is on there.

When Google Trends doesn’t update, as has been true for the past 10 hours, it’s hard to know what the hot search topic du jour is. One can assume that Tiger Woods is still on there, but there are probably a slew of more subtle searches going on that we won’t know about.

Google says that it updates the Trends list hourly. Sometimes there are delays, like today, though usually it’s not as long as 10 hours.”

Dems Debate Behind Closed Doors on Gov’t-Run Health Option

  76. samiam60 says:

WASHINGTON – On the Senate floor, Democrats are debating Republicans on health care. Behind the scenes, they’re debating each other.

Those closed-door discussions may be less predictable — and more consequential — as majority Democrats struggle to settle controversies within the party that are standing in the way of passage of President Barack Obama’s sweeping health care overhaul. The most contentious of these is a proposal for the government to sell insurance in competition with private companies, an approach supported by liberals but opposed by most Democratic moderates and conservatives.

Democrats were engaged in urgent talks to settle the government insurance plan issue.

“Our caucus is now in the process of negotiating with ourselves because we need all 60 of us to get this done,” moderate Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said after emerging from one meeting.

Senate procedures require 60 votes to overcome Republican delaying tactics designed to kill the bill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., controls precisely 60 votes, including two independents, but Landrieu and several other centrists are uneasy about the government insurance option in the bill, even though it would be open to a relatively small number of people — mostly the uninsured and small businesses — and Reid included a provision that would allow states to opt out of it.

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., along with Sens. Mark Begich of Alaska and Mark Warner of Va., are taking the lead in crafting a compromise. The idea remains a work in progress, but the three presented the outlines Thursday evening in a private meeting with about a half-dozen other moderates.

As described by Carper and Begich to reporters, the compromise would put a nonprofit insurance option in place only in states that didn’t meet certain criteria for affordability and access.

Instead of being controlled by the government, the plan could be run by a nonprofit board, and any initial government startup money would be repaid.

Among those in the meeting was Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, who has said he would filibuster the bill if a government option was included. He left the meeting early and said his position hadn’t altered.

“Generally speaking, I didn’t hear anything that changes my mind,” Lieberman said.

    Others were more optimistic.

“I’ve still got some concerns, but I am certainly pleased and proud that people are willing to work on it,” said Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., who faces a difficult re-election next year.

“I think that what’s being attempted here is perhaps an alternative to a public option,” said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb. “If that were to be developed, then perhaps Senator Lieberman’s objections would be satisfied.”

After their meeting, some of the centrists met with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other liberals who support a government-run health-insurance plan.

Democrats also face a clash over abortion as Nelson plans to offer an amendment with strict abortion restrictions that liberals say they can’t accept.

Nelson’s amendment probably will fail when it comes up early next week, but he has vowed to oppose the overall bill if his abortion language isn’t included. If Nelson follows through on that threat, Democrats would need all their other 59 caucus members plus one Republican to secure final passage — making the need for a broadly acceptable compromise on the government insurance plan even more urgent.

Overall, the $1 trillion, 10-year legislation would require most Americans to purchase insurance and provide federal subsidies to lower and middle-income individuals and families to defray the cost. Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be barred.

Freshman Democrats including Warner, Begich and Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., were making plans to leave their stamp on the bill with a package of amendments designed to enact tougher cost controls on the medical system. The measures would require Medicare to enact more pay-for-performance instead of pay-for-service measures and broaden the scope of a new independent Medicare cost-cutting board, among other things, according to an outline obtained by The Associated Press.

I’d let this guy put up a million flag poles. He has earned the right to do so.

Local World War II Veteran Fights Homeowner’s Association
Colonel Van Barfoot’s homeowner’s association has ordered him to remove the flagpole from his yard.
90 year-old Colonel Van Barfoot has until Friday to remove the flagpole from his yard.

Since this saga began, it’s been played out on the radio from Washington D.C. to Boston, but many believe what is happening to this true American hero is tarnishing the image of Richmond.

Barfoot lives in the Sussex Square community in western Henrico County. He moved there in July, and was ordered to remove the flagpole from his front lawn when he flew the flag on Labor Day, and again on Veterans Day.

The homeowner’s association doesn’t explicitly forbid flagpoles but they must be “aesthetically appropriate”. Short flags are allowed on porches, but Barfoot says that’s not the way he was raised to respect the flag.

“First of all, it’s not dignified, and it shows you got it in the half mast position… you can walk around here and I’ll bet you the American flag is hanging out in the rain, nobody ever checks it”, says Barfoot.

Family members say he’s the most decorated American combat veteran alive. Barfoot has been awared more than 20 medals, including the Medal of Honor, The Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, The Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

Wounded in combat three times, Barfoot fought in World War II and in Vietnam.

And he has the support of a lot of people, including Senator Mark Warner. Warner says he’s outraged Barfoot’s neighborhood association wants him to remove the flagpole from his yard.

Barfoot says he will take it to court.

Meanwhile, the Sussex Square Homeowner’s Association issued a statement saying in part, “This is not about the American flag. This is about a flagpole… We are a neighborhood of patriotic Americans, many of whom have served our country in the military as Col. Barfoot has done..”

The homeowner’s association also says Barfoot knew from the beginning that he wasn’t supposed to have a flagpole without permission.
