Flowers for Our Great Lady Sent by the Tea Party Movement

For several years, I sang my original, “Celebrate America” at monthly U.S. Immigration Citizenship Ceremonies in Maryland. I took great pride in the knowledge that mine was the first song the approximate 1000 applicants heard as new American citizens after taking their long dreamed of, oath of allegiance. Each ceremony was an emotional event of great celebration.

It was not unusual to see very old applicants in wheel chairs, proudly and tearfully taking the oath; their raised right hand supported by a grandchild, son or daughter. Obviously, becoming an American was a great honor to them. Unfortunately, such love and passion for our country seems the stuff of days gone by. To many, it is considered hoky, redneck, un-global minded (gag me) and even offensive to love your country. It simply isn’t sophisticated to be waving the flag all over the place. We patriots are those simple minded folks who “cling to God and guns” as Obama described us during his presidential campaign.LADY LIBERTY

Liberalism has contributed greatly to the decline of patriotism. The hostile takeover of our schools by Liberalism has indoctrinated many of our kids to hate their country. They are encouraged to sing the praises of Barack Hussein Obama, but not God and country.

Years ago, a dear white friend told me her son, who was in middle school, came home in tears feeling guilty for the horrible things his white ancestors and our founding fathers did to “Native Americans”. This poor kid was taught a laundry list of evils perpetuated by his race and America. Today, my friend’s son is a 22 year old Marxist who passionately hates Capitalism and America. Thank you, public school system.

The Tea Party Movement has sparked a resurgence of patriotism. The movement, itself was birthed out of fear of the far left agenda and radical changes being implemented by the Obama administration. Despite attempts by the liberal media and the Obama gang to convince us otherwise, we see and feel the threat of destruction of the traditions, values and institutions which we hold dear and have made America great.

The realization of Obama’s threat to our country is a blessing. Many of us have taken America, our Great Lady, for granted far too long; never telling her how pretty she is, how much we love her or how much we appreciate everything she does for us. And when is the last time you gave America flowers? America, we love you and don’t want to lose you.

In response to my article proclaiming that I am an American rather than a hyphenated African American, I received the following letter. Talk about having “the right stuff”, the author and his dad are great Americans. This letter reflects the kind of patriotism I long to see again on a massive scale.

Letter from an Unhyphenated American‏. Sir, I very much enjoy your articles in American Thinker and I can relate to the unhyphenated American moniker.  My father is a Holocaust survivor, Catholic from Poland.  He escaped to this country, joined the US Navy and earned his citizenship.  As a first-generation American, I can tell you that I cannot speak Polish…my father insisted that we learn only English because America saved him from the Nazis and the Soviets.  He married a Californian of Irish and Mexican decent and served in the Navy and the Navy reserves for over 30 years.  I am now into my 16th year in the United States Air Force.

I appreciate your story of overcoming adversity and your unabashed love of this country.  I just wanted to drop a line of encouragement for you activities in the Tea Party movement and urge you to continue to be a voice of common sense and reason in these uncertain times.”

Major (Though he signed his full name, I respect his privacy) USAF

Folks, you can feel the gratitude, love and respect these men have for their country. The father in this letter “gets it”. He knows what it means to live under tyranny and appreciates the great and rare wonderful gift we enjoy as Americans called freedom. He epitomizes the type of immigrant Lady Liberty and the American people embraces with open arms. He feels as the lyric in Lee Greenwood’s classic song, “…proud to be an American”.

Sunday (10-25-09) I begin traveling across America on the Tea Party Express II tour. While these rallies are where we encourage patriots to stay strong and work to restore our freedom, liberty and culture, they are love letters and flowers to America. The rallies are also a continuation of my Million Hand Shake March.

  2. Were you all at the DC teaparty? I was ;)

Yes. The teabagger ( slur ) from the left. I had to laugh my azz off when Gwen Ifill was schooled on what “teabagger” actually means. Little did she know that she was talking about baw-ney f-wank & Anderson cooper.

I lost track how many blogposts I have published (so far) today… gee

I did 8 iReports in one day once and a leftist whiner lodged a complaint about me doing too many and that I should be prevented from doing that…

    hahahahaha

he must have been going bug-S trying to keep up so he could troll them all! LOL

  9. VotingFemale says:

obama shooting his mouth off live… has that kicked dog look on his face… someone must have told him what is behind Glenn Beck’s blue curtain…

Harry Reid just released the House Version of the ObamaCare Bill which is a communist’s wet dream soup to nuts… its got everything to light up Pelosi’s Holiday Tree

  10. The DC teaparty was one of the most amazing experiences, ever! I met ppl from Alaska to Hawaii.

VF, You need to keep on those libs at ireports, lol~ I’m not going back there.

Eight reports is nothing! but the left claims ireports as their territory.

I bet I know who complained. Does she have a teddy bear as her avie. lol~~~

Ann Coulter is one smart cookie~ I can’t stomach Keith but “Dailykos” sounds about right. As Keith’s source for leftwing, looney BS~ Or the huffington post.

I’ll never forget reading both of those blogs for the first time. It is litterally shocking what these anti American, azzes think.

When scumbag,Ted Kennedy died. The Huffington post blogged about how Mary Jo Kopechene was lucky to have known Ted Kennedy & how no one would’ve known who? she was.

Are these morons serious?! I’m a native New Englander. The name “Kennedy” is/was a bad word
    in our home. Ted Kennedy
left that poor woman to drown in a sinking car. While he went off to party more.

Susan… this blog gets a lot of traffic from iReporters daily… they read the comments like vultures waiting for something to die, hoping to get my blog brought down…

They will be waiting a long long time! ;)

    this ain’t iReport.com.

They actually tried to get iReport.com to moderate my wordpress blog… and got laughed at by iReport… wordpress admin laughed at them too when they complained…

damn dorks! their postal, entitlement, whining, poor pitiful them mentality is a laughing stock around here.

  14. Opps! sp* * literally*

VF , My dad still considers himself a Democrat. My mom hates the Dems. libs.lol~ Yet they’ve been married for over 40 years. lol~ Goes to show ya that in the end. All politicians suck! but that’s why we need teaparties, all of the time-

I do not think that Dems. like my husband or my dad do not know or understand, who? they are associated with.

Today’s Dems. are not what they were, even 20 years ago. They are batsh*t crazy! Anti merican & socialists.

Although… I am 39. My first time voting. I voted for Bush#1. Both of my parents voted for Reagan.

  15. VotingFemale says:

Susan, in my observation, Many folks are not up to speed in politics… they do not know what it is they don’t know

To many, a political party is like belonging to a particular religion where they neither read the good book nor attend services…

  16. VotingFemale says:

    then there are these folks…

  17. VF,

Ireport libs are the worst. They blame Wal-mart, Conservatives, America! Everyone BUT themselves. We are all struggling these days. Thanks to a used car salesman who is still out there campaining & doing media interviews.Instead of keeping his campaign promises.

Word(s) 2 libs. “Personal responsibility”. Nothing is for free and there are no free rides. Someone has to pay.

  18. VF, I totally agree. Honestly I am soooo sick of both parties. That is why I go to the teaparties. It’s “we the people” NOT “We the politicians”.

  19. Holy crap!!! Is Barry & company really going to give GM,a second bailout?!?!

Bailouts are nothing but rewarding failure(s).

  20. Foxwood says:

“Many folks are not up to speed in politics… they do not know what it is they don’t know”

Got that right. They are political morons. That is our job, to set them straight.

  21. tellitlikeitis says:

I think many folks are paying more attention to what’s going on in Washington now than before because thier lives are being directly impacted now because of the continued reckless spending and irresponsibilty that goes on everyday. The liberals hate it because it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to operate under the cover of darkness like they had in the past screwing the American tax payer. As a back up for my comment this health care reform should have been a slam dunk for them and they are still bickering and debating it.

  22. VotingFemale says:

    exactly Susan…

and I, for one, will not be taken for granted by the GOP

the Rockefeller GOPers need a serious slap to wake them up… and I pray Doug Hoffman wins in NJ…

That would be a wake up call

  23. Foxwood, laugh-out-loud! you are sooooo correct!

Do you know another thing that gets ME! Foreigners who blog from ireports & other liberal blogs about how America should be run. ARRGGHHHHH! There is one Canadian kook on ireports that spews all this anti American spew. Of course CNN allows it! but who is this guy to tell America what to do?!

My G Grandmother married a Canadian gentleman ( second marriage ) and when asked about American politics. He would kindly say “I am a foreigner here.So I’d rather not comment or get involved”.

Ppl like Arriana Huffington should be deported. OMG! if I said that on ireports. I would be banned.lol~ Oh wait! I have been banned for I think? telling a lib to grow up & read a book~

  24. VotingFemale says:

  36. God bless Lloyd Marcus. It takes guts & glory* to speak out. Of course liberalism is a mental disorder not a skin color.

I know of white trash couples that have gotten a divorce just to get more govt. money.

Still~ he is such a man of integrity and I’ve heard about all the hate mail that he gets from vile libs. -Disgusting but not surprising.

Same thing with the Communist Feminists who slash with sexism at conservative women… these liberalism-snorting women will all rot in the fires of Hell… lower than the droppings of whales.

  43. Sad but true- The thing is that most blacks are “Christians” and very conservative.

I luv hip-hop music ( some of it ) and 50 cent was on this station a couple of days ago. The radio ppl assumed that he was a lib or a Dem. Well guess what?! 50 cents is definitely NOT~ He ripped Dems. & libs a new one but you what… you may never hear about it because libs would never allow it to be all over there leftist media.

Martin Luther King was NOT a lib or a Dem. He was a registered Republican. This is another thing that the media sweeps under the rug.

  44. VotingFemale says:

yes… the Leftists hate the fact that MLK was a Republican…

And will lie to cover the fact that the KKK was started and populated by the DEM Party

  45. Dems. are still racist & def. anti-semitic( read ireports ). Libs hate white ppl too ( including themselves ). It’s quite dysfunctional & not healthy.

  46. tellitlikeitis says:

The democratic party has continued the slavery. The new slavery is economic slavery and dependancy. The Dems use them by promising them the world during an election cycle for the votes then cast them aside when they get elected. You would think they would get wise to it by now.

that’s why the 3% hack figure on the GDP which is all fake because it’s just “GOVERNMENT expansion” not private-sector consumer spending/investing which is REAL economic growth.

  82. m2 says:

    From another commenter on AT:

What is this “plan”? Sustainable Development.

Sustainable Development is a framework of thought to “save our planet” by harmonizing eco-systems with industry and population. In its most modern iteration (inasmuch it has been around a long time), it is the outcome of the Earth Summit, and is organized around “climate change”, man’s impact on environmental resources and the organic biosphere we live within. It is currently getting notoriety as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which is the Treaty that legally binds all nations to Agenda 21. Although much larger than this, we could summarize that it is the outcome of Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truths. It is a blueprint to ‘radically change the entire world in the name of Economic, Social, and Environmental EQUITY.

We ask ourselves where did Obama’s entire team of Czars’ come from? What is their role? Where did the language for all these massive Bills come from? Most of Obama’s czars are from the world of academia and had been contributors to the thoughts that went into this Global Vision as perceived and outlined by the United Nations.

At the Earth Summit meeting Al Gore said: “Americans are going to have to face a wrenching transformation of Society.”

UN General Assembly President Miguel D’Escoto blatantly moved the conference to denounce the free market system, saying, “Capitalism cannot be reformed…”He went on to say, “Egotism and greed cannot be corrected …we must go beyond controls and corrections… to create something that strives towards a new paradigm of social coexistence.”

Based upon “scientific proof” that man is killing the planet; an entire framework of thought has evolved to re-shape the globe. It makes no difference that any of this evidence doesn’t even conform to the principles of the Scientific Method, nor even if it did, that it proves man has created climate change. The conclusions from these scientific tests are speculative. What does matter though is the importance it has to foisting a political agenda!

This political agenda is based on conclusions that are extrapolated from a school of thought known as the ‘precautionary principle’. In a nutshell, the precautionary principle translates to this: If there is any possible risks, stop. If evidence is inconclusive, stop. If there is no proof, stop anyway. As a political agenda, the latter is transformed to mean that in the absence of proof, just repeat what you want others to believe long enough so that they also believe it, then legislation can be passed to prevent this possible outcome. Clever, isn’t it? This is the ‘science’ created by politicians, and it is this irrationality that is the driving force behind the notion of man-made climate change. It is this irrationality that has concluded that pets and babies are destroying our planet. If politics was not the engaged in the influence of people, a better case could be made that fish poop in the ocean, therefore fish are destroying our planet. Sadly, fish don’t pay taxes, so they are allowed to poop us into oblivion.

Although 31,708 U.S. scientists have published research and tried to argue vehemently against the data upon which ‘the radical transformation of our Society’ is being predicated upon; have you heard any of them? They have been silenced, ridiculed, driven out of teaching positions, had Grants cut off, and some even imprisoned. ‘The Plan’ will not tolerate dissent. The United Nations IPCC also publishes a research review in the form of a voluminous, occasionally-updated report on the subject of climate change, which the United Nations asserts is “authored” by approximately 600 scientists. These “authors” however are not permitted power of approval over the publication. They are permitted to comment on the draft text, but the final text neither conforms to nor includes many of their comments. The final text conforms instead to the United Nations objective of building support for world taxation and rationing of industrially-useful energy.

Sustainable Development theory has encroached upon every American in ways they have not even recognized. The language of Sustainable Development has pervaded our society. When Bush signed us into UNESCO, the education of our children was to teach them global citizenship and environmental stewardship. Globally acceptable “truths” are now:

    Global Warming is globally-acceptable truth.
The United Nations’ Declaration on Human Rights is globally-acceptable truth.
Universal health care is globally-acceptable truth.
Environmentally friendly transportation is globally-acceptable truth
The common good over the individual is globally-acceptable truth.
Independent sovereign nations as a source of war is a globally-acceptable truth.
Global governance for the future peace of man-kind is a globally-acceptable truth.
Global citizenship is a globally-acceptable truth.
Severe reduction of the population is globally-acceptable truth.

The language of all these massive bills, (particularly Health Care Reform and Cap & Trade), are straight out of Agenda 21. Just by reading the 40 chapter titles of this document would give one a pretty good understanding of what is going on if they are in the least politically aware and can connect the dots.

“All biological life has natural cycles of birth and death, and we should learn to accept these natural cycles and teach people that saving lives at birth or extending life at our times end is non-sustainable”. In other words, what these Sustainabilist’s are saying is…”can’t you just have the good grace to simply die, rather than be a strain on Society”? Or, “why can’t you just accept your baby was born defective and can never be a contributing member to Society, and have the decency to simply let ‘it’ die”. Can this really be happening? Yes, it is happening. Every re-iteration of Health Care Reform bills have heavy taxes to be levied against Medical Devices. These devices are the ones used to sustain life, to extend life. They simply must be run out of business! There are heavy restrictions and taxes to be levied against any/all homeopathic supplements and other Natural Supplements that will force subscription to only those drugs that are supported by our Regime. Those drugs will become vastly reduced as well, as life extending drugs will be increasingly limited. Cures that make economical sense will be endorsed. Prevention and Extension are deemed non-sustainable.

Two major components of Sustainable Development are de-population/population control and bio-equity. As Cass Sunstein announced: “animals and all living creatures have equal rights to humans.” We may laugh, but they are laughing harder as the re-shape the map of the United States in nefarious ways to meet the objectives of Sustainable Development. The political goal (in the name of ‘green’, of course) is to have all population living in government-controlled urbanized enclaves, where private transportation choices will become a thing of the past. We are to live, work, and socialize within these cities, brought to you under the lexicon of ‘smart growth’, and all its derivative language.

Over 400,000 square miles of the United States is currently being “grabbed” by the Government in the name of the Agenda 21 Wildlands Project, referred to hereafter as TWP. (The Wildlands Project). There are currently 39 massive WP’s ongoing in the United States this very moment with the objective to engineer population distribution.

Private property and single family homes are deemed non-sustainable. Cap and Trade is clearly outlined in Agenda 21, and as you may be aware, if this passes it gives the Federal Government almost full control over your property. The EPA will determine if your house meets the standards it decides (for the moment) are acceptable to them so you can re-sell your home. This is one insidious slippery slope. Yes, your name will still be on the deed, but the choices on how you live in your house will not be left up to you. You get to pay the bills, you have to pay the taxes, and you will have to pay the fines levied against you as the Government starts handing out violation notices. Your house will become your nightmare! Your electricity, air conditioning, heating, water, insulation, roof, windows, doors, etc., will all be subject to new regulations.

Another aspect of Cap and Trade (straight out of Agenda 21) is sustainable water usage. This plays role throughout all aspects of Agenda 21. Currently, the average American household uses 100 gals/day of water. This will be limited to 26 gals/day. Cows are non-sustainable, they require too much water, land, and they emit too much carbon dioxide. Both Healthcare and Cap & Trade are taking care of this pesky problem. Hope you like tofu and bean sprouts. These are just a couple of examples among thousands.
It all can be summarized this way: Sustainable Development is essentially the “land grab”. The Wildlands Project is the “water grab”. Health Care Reform is the “body grab”. Cap and Trade is the “private property grab”. It is much more complex of course, but it can readily be discerned when you consider all the new Codex Laws for Agriculture that have been passed, all the enumerated powers given the USDA, EPA, FDA, OSHA, etc. These “grabs” are being enacted in numerous ways, but they ALL flow from Agenda 21.

Pelosi Bill: Get Ready to Grow that Enemies List [Tevi Troy]

The White House seems fond of making enemies lists these days, so it seems worthwhile to look at the just-released House health package to determine who non-partisan journalists think might be joining the enemies list in the near future:

    1. States — The House bill will be increasing the threshold for Medicaid eligibility from 133 percent of poverty to 150 percent. According to the Wall Street Journal, “The Medicaid expansion is likely to prompt protests from the states, who share the program’s costs with the federal government.”

    2. Employers — The Journal notes that the legislation will impose a payroll tax on employers with over 500,000 in payroll who do not offer health insurance. Per the Journal, “The penalty gradually rises, and firms with payroll greater than $750,000 would pay a penalty of 8% of payroll. Senate versions of the bill have weaker penalties.”

    3. Liberals — The Journal also observes that “The loss of the ‘robust’ public option tied to Medicare rates was a defeat for liberals, who had lobbied hard for the measure.”

    4. Budget hawks — Per Politico: “The legislation is projected to create deficits over the second five years, a fact that should give budget hawks plenty to worry about.”

    5. Conservatives, specifically pro-lifers and those worried about illegal immigration — As the Washington Post notes, “sticking points involving abortion and immigration remain unresolved.”

    6. Wealthy people . . . — A CNN story explains that “the measure is financed largely through a combination of a tax surcharge on wealthy Americans . . . ”

    7. . . . as well as Medicare and Medicaid recipients — “ . . . and spending constraints in Medicare and Medicaid.”

Politico also looks at three industry groups likely to be unhappy, specifically:

    8. Pharmaceutical Companies — “The legislation imposes as much as $150 billion in Medicare cuts on the prescription-drug industry — almost double the $80 billion cuts in the Senate bill.”

    9. Medical Device Manufacturers — “It imposes a 2.5 percent tax on medical device manufacturers, a quietly influential force on Capitol Hill,”

    10. Insurers — “Health insurers, who have already agreed to end many of the practices banned by the bill, would have to compete with a government-run insurance vehicle that would put pressure on them to lower premiums.”

All told, the Pelosi approach is an impressive demonstration of coalition building . . . if you’re trying to build a coalition of opponents.

In every successive Congress since 1995, conservative Arizona Republican Rep. John Shadegg has sponsored the Enumerated Powers Act (HR 1359), which requires that “Each Act of Congress shall contain a concise and definite statement of the constitutional authority relied upon for the enactment of each portion of that Act.”

The measure continues to fail, however, because of a dirty little secret: There is no legitimate constitutional authority for almost 70 percent of current federal government programs, and, thus, no authority for the collection of taxes to fund such activities.

Though Obama swore to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” and every member of Congress has pledged “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” and “bear true faith and allegiance to the same,” Democrats, and too many Republicans, have forsaken their sacred oaths.

In doing so, they have inflicted grievous injury upon our Constitution, thereby placing our Essential Liberty in eminent peril.

In May 1775, at the onset of the hostilities that gave rise to our Declaration of Independence and Constitution, the Second Continental Congress adopted a resolution calling on the states to prepare for rebellion. In its preamble, John Adams advised his countrymen to sever all oaths of allegiance to the Crown.

Since that time, generations of American Patriots have honored their oaths, shed their blood, given their lives — but not to the crown of any man or a partisan sect. Instead, these sacrifices have been made to support and defend our Constitution and the Rule of Law it established.

Put simply, there is no authority for a “constitutional rewrite” by Barack Hussein Obama, nor Nancy Pelosi, nor Steny Hoyer, nor any like-minded revisionists. Such contempt for our Constitution, such willful violation of their sacred oaths is a disgrace to the selfless dignity of generations of Patriots before them.

At present, we have a gang of outlaws at the helms of the executive and legislative branches. Under such despots, we are being unlawfully taxed without lawful representation. Sound familiar?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims
throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in
New Orleans , would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue
with claims of racism and incompetence?

If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to
him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America ,
    would you have approved.

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major
corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so,
    would you have approved?

If George W Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken
more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have
    approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10
    years, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and
impressive? Can’t think of anything? Don’t worry. He’s done all this in 5

Lisa, this kind of double-standard affects all conservatives, and cannot be tolerated. The NFL’s spineless attacks on Rush are indefensible. Even when the truth was revealed, Goodell refused to apologize, passing up an opportunity to be a man and set the record straight.

That’s why we must take action. Left unchecked and unchallenged, baseless attacks like these will only intensify until the Left has succeeded in silencing us.

Health Care Businesses at Risk in House Bill
Legislation produced by House Democrats would impose an array of new taxes, fees and government mandates on major players in the health industry, including insurers, doctors and drugs

WASHINGTON — The health care overhaul bill produced by House Democrats would impose an array of new taxes, fees and government mandates on major players in the health industry, including insurers, doctors and drugs and medical devices makers.

In most cases, the pain has been meted out with an eye toward raising the money needed to finance President Barack Obama’s plan for reshaping the health system but also with careful regard for gaining the votes that will be needed to pass a final bill.

Democrats hope to vote next week on the measure, which would extend health coverage to tens of millions of Americans who don’t have it, impose sweeping new restrictions on private insurers and create a government-run insurance plan to compete with them.

Among the industries targeted in the bill are medical device makers — one of the few that failed to cut an early behind-the-scenes deal with Obama and Democrats to help pay for an overhaul. The House added $20 billion in taxes on sales of medical devices like artificial hips and heart stents to the legislation Democratic leaders unveiled Thursday.

That’s more than the industry wants to pay, but it’s a substantial reprieve from an earlier plan in the Senate to slap a $40 billion fee on medical device makers. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has agreed to slash the fee, in part to win cooperation from fence-sitting Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana.

Bayh, whose state is home to prominent medical device makers, including Zimmer Holdings Inc., Biomet and DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., is one of a handful of wavering Democrats whose support will be vital to getting to the 60 Senate votes necessary to advance the health overhaul. That means he and other holdouts have disproportionate power to cut deals on behalf of favored industries that are bracing for major costs under the new system.

Stephen J. Ubl, the president of AdvaMed, the trade group representing large medical device makers, said the group appreciates House leaders’ decision to include the smaller version of the tax and is “grateful for the efforts” of Bayh and others to do the same in the Senate. In a statement, Ubl seemed to indicate that his group was willing to go along if Congress helped cushion the blow.

“We look forward to working with Congress and the administration on critically important implementation issues,” Ubl said, including seeking AdvaMed priorities such as delaying the tax until 2013 — which the House measure does — tying it to specific products, exempting small companies with less than $100 million in annual revenue and making it deductible.

The measure is less kind to drug makers, an industry that did strike a deal with Obama and key senators to hold down its costs. Pharmaceutical companies agreed to cough up $80 billion in the health overhaul. While precise figures were not immediately available, it appeared the House legislation would target the industry for much more. And it would give the government power to negotiate drug prices on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries.

Ken Johnson of the trade group the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said lawmakers were being “unrealistic in their expectations of what our industry can contribute to health care reform without triggering catastrophic job losses and driving innovation and business overseas.”

The $80 billion figure “is a huge amount of money — it’s not loose change we found sitting around in the sofa,” said Johnson, who added that the drug makers would be busy in the coming days contacting House and Senate leaders “trying to educate them” on how damaging further cuts would be.

On the other hand, the industry managed to come away with a provision worth billions: 12 years of market protection for high-tech drugs to combat cancer, Parkinson’s and other deadly diseases.

Health insurers, who would gain tens of millions of new customers under the health plan, nonetheless would be ensnared by some potentially costly new measures, including eliminating their long-standing antitrust exemption.

They voiced particular concern about Democrats’ inclusion of the government-run insurance plan. Karen Ignani, the chief of the insurers’ main trade group, America’s Health Insurance Plans, said the so-called public option would “bankrupt hospitals, dismantle employer coverage, exacerbate cost-shifting from Medicare and Medicaid, and ultimately increase the federal deficit.” She said the result would be that many people, including seniors, would lose coverage or face higher costs.

The measure also drops a reprieve for doctors from scheduled pay cuts for treating Medicare patients, which House leaders now plan to pursue separately from the broader health bill. The Senate last week turned back an attempt to pass the pay-raise on its own at a cost of $247 billion over the next decade — sidetracking what the American Medical Association has made a key priority in the health overhaul negotiations.

But doctors, hospitals and other providers won a key concession that would let them negotiate rates with the Health and Human Services Department for services provided in the government insurance plan. Key Democratic moderates whose votes were needed to pass the plan insisted on that approach, at the urging of hospitals in their districts. Liberals wanted rates to be dictated by the government, which would have been less costly.

Chip Kahn, the president of the Federation of American Hospitals, cheered the bill, saying it moves toward “a market-based health system.”

    Good Morning Everyone!

House health bill clocks in at 1,990 pages

Tags:Health Care Reform, Joe Barton, Democrats, Patrick McHenry, Barney Frank, Public Option, Lee Terry, Anthony Weiner, Steve Rothman, Health Care Bill

It runs more pages than War and Peace, has nearly five times as many words as the Torah, and its tables of contents alone run far longer than this story.

The House health care bill unveiled Thursday clocks in at 1,990 pages and about 400,000 words. With an estimated 10-year cost of $894 billion, that comes out to about $2.24 million per word. .

And for some members, that may not be enough.

A “robust” public option can’t be found in the bill. Neither can the word “doctor” – save for a few references to degrees. No “cost curve” is bent. No “blue pill” is dispensed.

“Death” and “taxes” are both in there, but “death panel” is not.

The text defines dozens of words and phrases, including “family” (“an individual and . . . the individual’s dependents”), “health insurance coverage,” “exchange-eligible individual” and “Indian.”

And for those who cry “read the bill,” beware. There are plenty of paragraphs like this one:

“(a) Outpatient Hospitals – (1) In General – Section 1833(t)(3)(C)(iv) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1395(t)(3)(C)(iv)) is amended – (A) in the first sentence – (i) by inserting “(which is subject to the productivity adjustment described in subclause (II) of such section)” after “1886(b)(3)(B)(iii); and (ii) by inserting “(but not below 0)” after “reduced”; and (B) in the second sentence, by inserting “and which is subject, beginning with 2010 to the productivity adjustment described in section 1886(b)(3)(B)(iii)(II)”.

The section deals with “incorporating productivity improvements into market basket updates that do not already incorporate such improvements,” if that helps.

Optimistic lawmakers say it could take a week just to get through the bill’s text.

“I’ll have to call an emergency meeting of my staff and drop the customary procedure of me reading and my staff not reading,” joked House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.), who famously told filmmaker Michael Moore that lawmakers “don’t read most of the bills.”

“It’s one thing to read it,” said Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.), a lawyer who voted against the first version of the bill on its way through the Energy and Commerce Committee. “It’s another thing to understand it when it’s written in legalese.”

When given the bill’s dimensions, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) noted that some members are faster readers than others.

“That’s one afternoon for Barney Frank,” he said.

Republicans aide said a print-out of the bill weighs more than 19 pounds and stands nearly nine inches tall.

North Carolina Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, 34 years old and a few inches taller than 5 feet, said the bill could act as a ”booster seat.”

Democrats say the essence of the bill isn’t much different from the three sister bills they moved through committees this summer, which came in around 1,000 pages.

If you read those, they say, you pretty much know what’s in this one.

“It’s almost a complete certainty that we have already discussed and debated almost every element that’s in this bill,” said Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.)

McHenry took issue with the notion that the 2,000-page bill hasn’t changed much from the earlier, 1,000-page versions. To prove the point, he pulled out a Democratic-written summary of the changes.

    All eight pages of them.

Asked why the House will vote on the roughly 400,000-word bill in a week when it takes a congregation a year to read the 80,000-word Torah at a synagogue, Rothman, who is Jewish, exhibited the wisdom of a Talmudic scholar.

“It only takes a year because you read one section a week,” he said.

But Republican Rep. Joe Barton, who is Texan, said the bill is “about four reams of paper” that add up to the American public “getting reamed.”

    Obama Golf Handicap System Update

THE USGA WOULD LIKE TO INFORM ALL GOLFERS

There is a possibility of major rule changes to the game of golf, which are scheduled to occur during the first 100 days of the Obama Administration. This message is a preview of the complete rulebook, which is in the process of being rewritten now. An overview of the basic rule changes follow.

    A. Golfers with handicaps:
    – below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35%
    – between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees
    – above 18 will play for free and even get a check from
    the club/course played

    B. The amount of money put in for bets will be as follows:
    – for handicaps below 10 an additional $10
    – between 11 and 18 no additional amount
    – above 18 you will receive the total amount in the pot and you do not even have to play.

    C. The term “gimme” putt will be changed to “entitlement” and will be used as follows:
    – handicaps below 10, no entitlements
    – handicaps above 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts
    – handicaps above 18, if on green, no need to ever putt, just pick it up, it’s good.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness in scoring so that the final scores of all players will be about the same.

In addition, a player will be limited to a max of one birdie and/or six pars, after which any excess strokes must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par.

Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player making the birdie or par, can that Player begin to count his score again.

The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes but the term ‘net score’ will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps 18 and above. This is intended to ‘redistribute’ the success of winning by making sure that in every competition the above 18 handicap players will post only ‘net score’ against every other player’s gross score.

Remember that under the new administration, golf must be about fairness. The goal of the new rulebook should help players of all ability levels to enjoy a level playing field.

it is not fair that a child molester/killer sometimes gets away with it… and the child is trashed and dead.

that some folks are born in a given race or country and others in another race or country.

some folks are born with brain impediments and others as geniuses

that some folks’ parents suck and other folks’ parents are cool

that some folks are gifted athletes and others are not…

that some folks have an inborn drive to perform great accomplishments and others lack that inborn drive

that some folks are born into wealth and others into poverty

that some folks die young and others live to a ripe old age

that some folks are born male while others are born female and visa versa

that some folks are fair of face or sing truly well and others are not fair of face or can not sing well…

and there is nothing that can change the unfairness of life itself.

that some people have relatively few health problems while others suffer greatly

that some people are old and others are young… but that one evens out in time… everyone grows old or dies at at not old age… time waits for no one.

some folks win the lottery and others don’t.

the world is not fair… and never will be.

The inequality of life itself is not a pass or excuse for people to treat other people poorly; up or down… for how we personally treat others is a matter of individual choice.

Judge dismisses suit about Obama’s eligibility to be president

(CNN) – President Barack Obama may have one less problem to worry about.

A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that claimed Obama is ineligible to be president because he isn’t a bona fide U.S. citizen.

The lawsuit represented the claim by the so-called “birthers” movement that Obama was not born in Hawaii – despite a birth certificate to the contrary – or that if he was, his citizenship was invalidated by living overseas as a child.

In a 30-page ruling, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter of California said his court lacked the jurisdiction to rule on a case intended to unseat a sitting president.

Carter’s ruling said the plaintiffs were trying to persuade him to “disregard the constitutional procedures in place for the removal of a sitting president.”

“The process for removal of a sitting president – removal for any reason – is within the province of Congress, not the courts,” the ruling said.

Carter’s ruling also noted that the plaintiffs “have attacked the judiciary, including every prior court that has dismissed their claim, as unpatriotic and even treasonous for refusing to grant their requests and for adhering to the terms of the Constitution.”

“Respecting the constitutional role and jurisdiction of this court is not unpatriotic,” the ruling said. “Quite the contrary, this court considers commitment to that constitutional role to be the ultimate reflection of patriotism.”

  158. tellitlikeitis says:

Good morning again everyone! This might be a setback for the birther movement but there are still many lawsuits waiting in the wings.

  159. VotingFemale says:

    well…

Health Care Businesses at Risk in House Overhaul

Published: Friday, 30 Oct 2009 | 5:17 AM ET By: AP
The health care overhaul bill produced by House Democrats would impose an array of new taxes, fees and government mandates on major players in the health industry, including insurers, doctors and drugs and medical devices makers.

Bayh, whose state is home to prominent medical device makers, including Zimmer Holdings, Biomet and DePuy Orthopaedics, is one of a handful of wavering Democrats whose support will be vital to getting to the 60 Senate votes necessary to advance the health overhaul.

East Coast Races Impact All Americans

    Tue at 12:36am

As I stand here in a high school gymnasium watching freshmen girls’ basketball games, I’m struck by the sight of America’s future right in front of me – these tenacious young women full of energy and intensity. I want them to realize every opportunity this great, free nation can provide.

There are big political races on the East Coast that are coming down to the wire – the results of which will impact policies and political actions that touch all of us in every state. Like other independent Americans, I don’t always see eye-to-eye with Republican political committees, so when I tell you that the Republican Governors Association has my complete support and confidence in its campaign efforts back East, know that I really mean it. The RGA is helping lead the conservative comeback beginning this year, and its involvement in the East Coast races is significant. I hope you’ll support these efforts, which are vital to the cause for America’s freedom and prosperity: http://www.rga.org/initiatives/comeback-fund/.

Let’s consider the governor’s race in New Jersey. The state has the highest tax burden in the country and the incumbent Democrat governor has only added to the economic burden. He eliminated property tax rebates for middle class homeowners while the sales tax increased. Altogether, taxes on the people in the region have increased by billions of dollars. It’s no surprise that New Jersey has the highest unemployment rate in the region! Thankfully, there is an alternative. Residents there will be better off under an administration that understands the benefits that result when workers are allowed to keep more of what they earn. Watch New Jersey’s economy come alive under new leadership that will put government back on the side of the people! Chris Christie promises this new leadership.

Fortunately, New Jersey’s Democrat governor is being held accountable with the RGA spending $7 million in the New York and Philadelphia media markets telling the truth about a liberal administrative record while highlighting New Jersey’s tax-hiking ways and reminding voters there is an alternative! The NY and Philly markets are the most expensive in the nation though, so the RGA is requesting help to stay on the air. Visit http://www.rga.org/initiatives/comeback-fund/.

Then in Virginia, there is a clear difference between Republican Bob McDonnell and his liberal opponent. Republican Bob McDonnell is fighting for cheaper American energy and lower taxes, while his opponent wants to raise taxes and, amazingly, even bragged about having more earmarks than any other state legislator. Bob McDonnell promises to fight for Virginia’s hard working families, and he opposes some heavy-handed union leadership efforts that could ultimately hurt employers and employees. The RGA has aired $6 million of TV ads exposing the liberal candidate’s record. I encourage you to help fight for our neighbors in the East by visiting: http://www.rga.org/initiatives/comeback-fund/.

Americans who believe in smaller government and free enterprise have a chance to show Washington that people all across the U.S. don’t want an ever-increasing national debt, more dependency on foreign energy sources, and more wasteful government spending. If, like me, this is what you want to show Washington, then I hope you’ll support Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell and the RGA, as great efforts are put forth in these East Coast races.

The young student athletes I’m watching right now are counting on us to do the right thing – to fight for what is right for America today and into their future. Electing candidates with common sense and respect for freedom is one way we can fight for what is right.

    – Sarah Palin

    Good mornin’ all~

Sarah Palin was very kind to say that about McDonell in VA. Excuse my French & I am French :) but Sarah Palin offered Bob McDonell help in VA & the prick turned her down & not in a very nice way.

I live in Virginia & I plan on writing Sarah Palin’s name in.

Craig Deeds on the other hand can not even complete a sentence.

Good Morning Susan and good to see you here today.

America is at a critical crossroads and it is going to take all of us all of the time to turn back the evil Obama has brought down upon our American Way of Life.

  175. VotingFemale says:

    as for Sarah Palin…

The world has yet to see Sarah Palin 2.0

yes, Sarah was not invited to campaign for the VA GOP Governor hopeful.

yes, there are people who think Sarah is not a force to be reckoned with…

yes, there are people who have faith that Sarah Palin 2.0 will be a political force in the future and will establish herself in powerful ways on the Political Scene and I am one of them.

    That future has a start date… February 16, 2009.

We will see what we will see… huh, Sarah?

  176. VotingFemale says:

Susan? where did you go, dear???

I know for a fact it is you, I verified it… you just need to login to http://wordpress.com to get your previous username spelling, hyperlink and avatar back.

VF, I agree. The world has yet to see how tough Sarah Palin is or can be but I think that we the people must continue to go to bat for her with the hateful left. The libs are obsessed with Sarah Palin. I think they have got a serious infatuation with her. I’m talking … like stalking her & sh*t!

Even ET has something about Sarah Palin on it’s pathetic show, every night. I only watch because I think that we should have her back.

fixing a foul up can be a little tricky if one has not yet gotten up to speed on gravatar stuff.

I know what I see in her… and it is real. That she was unprepared to deal with the likes of couric and gibson at the time of her two interviews was what it was… but it in no way was an indication of intelligence…

being a governor and a good one is an indication of intelligence.

I laugh my fanny off at wal-marting liberals who have achieved nothing in life making comments about Palin’s intelligence…

It benefits the left revolution to keep the race issue burning. Most American’s have transcended that hateful dictate, but the lefters WANT and NEED to stir up this issue to further their Marxist agenda….without it they fail in their endeavors to ‘transform America” into a Communist Nation.
They use RADICAL special interest groups like the SEIU, ACTUP, La Raza, etc
to push others that are uninformed into ‘conforming’ into their sheeple flocks of anarchy…..

  218. The flag, America,it’s traditons & protecting this country are definitely offensive to libs. The pledge of allegiance? Oh! that is not necessary to a lib. It’s actually offensive.

They want America to be EU or Canada.

  219. Lisa, I’ll tell ya. I worry about black conservatives/Republicans because the left
despises them for *thinking for themselves*. Listen to Loyld Marcus. He has received death threats & all kinds of racist slurs have been thrown at him & others.

Jobs Created or Saved’ Is White House Fantasy: Caroline Baum

    Commentary by Caroline Baum

Last week, the chairman of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers — a position that carried the title “chief economist” until Larry Summers took up residence in the White House — testified to the Joint Economic Committee on the economic crisis and the efficacy of the policy response.

Here’s the executive summary in case you missed it:

    The crisis: “Inherited.”

The economy: “In terrible shape” (the inherited one).

The shocks to the system: “Larger than those that precipitated the Great Depression.”

The policy response: “Strong and timely.”

The efficacy of the policy response: a 2 to 3 percentage point addition to second-quarter growth; 3 to 4 percentage points in the third; and 160,000 to 1.5 million “jobs saved or created,” a made-up metric if there ever was one. (More on that later.)

What was most puzzling about Romer’s Oct. 22 testimony was her comment on the waning effect of fiscal stimulus.

“Most analysts predict that the fiscal stimulus will have its greatest impact on growth in the second and third quarters of 2009,” Romer said. “By mid-2010, fiscal stimulus will likely be contributing little to growth.”

At first it was just fringe elements, such as conservative blogs and the not-really-a-news-organization Fox News, that pounced on Romer’s statement. Then other news outlets started to question her statement, which seemed to fly in the face of White House assertions that only a small portion of the stimulus — $120 billion, or 15 percent — has actually been spent. Most of the criticism of the stimulus coming from the president’s own party has been, “too little, too late,” and here’s Romer saying it’s kaput.

    Thanks for That

Instead of being banished to the woodshed, Romer was consigned to the White House blog, where she slipped into professorial mode to explain the arcane distinction between the effect of the stimulus on the change in gross domestic product and its effect on the level of GDP.

Stimulus has its biggest impact on the growth rate of GDP when it’s implemented, Romer said, using a car-and-driver analogy: Step on the accelerator, the car goes from zero to 60.

Stimulus will keep the level of GDP and employment higher than they would have been even after the growth-rate effect fades, she said.

Her logic is impeccable. It’s her premise that’s flawed.

    Dispensing Lucre

When the government distributes lucre or loot, people spend it. If your interest is national income accounting, spending other people’s money is great. Spending is a back-door way for government statisticians to measure what matters, which is the real output of goods and services.

But the government has no money of its own to spend; only what it borrows or confiscates from us via taxation. Oops.

“Government job creation is an oxymoron,” said Bill Dunkelberg, chief economist at the National Federation of Independent Business. It is only by depriving the private sector of funds that government can hire or subsidize hiring.

That’s why “jobs created or saved” is such pure fiction. It ignores what’s unseen, as our old friend Frederic Bastiat explained so eloquently 160 years ago in an essay.

Econometric models synthesize all sorts of variables and spit out a GDP forecast. From there they derive the change in employment using something called Okun’s Law, named after the late economist Arthur Okun, which describes the relationship between the two.

    Fiction Lags Reality

Actual hiring seems to be lagging behind the model’s land of make-believe. For small businesses, which are the source of most job creation in the U.S., the government’s increased and changing role in the economy isn’t a confidence builder. Businessmen have no idea what health-care reform will mean for their cost structure or what whimsical tax policies the government might impose when it realizes those short-term deficits are running into long-term unfunded liabilities.

No wonder capital spending plans were at an all-time low in the third quarter, according to the NFIB monthly survey.

Only 30,383 jobs were created or saved by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to Recovery.gov, the government’s once-transparent Web site that has become a complex blur of numbers, graphs and pie charts. These are only the jobs reported by federal contract recipients. The Obama administration will report the larger universe of ARRA-related jobs on Oct. 30.

An extrapolation of what would have happened without the fiscal stimulus isn’t much consolation to the 9.8 percent of the workforce that is unemployed. Nor is Romer’s prescription for the economy and labor market very comforting in light of the trillions of future tax dollars that have been spent, lent or promised by the federal government.

well… he does not yet understand how wordpress works if that is what he is saying, with all due respect for his expertise in computers and the net… let me explain.

when you “log in on my blog”… you are actually logging into wordpress itself, into your own private wordpress account… there actually is no way to log into my blog…. it just looks like it.

there are things about wordpress that are not all that intuitive and this login stuff and the Gravatar as opposed to a site specific avatar is two examples of this.

There is a website, blog, specific icon called the Blavatar…

that is a special icon strictly for your blog itself which you can upload for your blog. I use the same pic for my Gravatar as I do for my Blavatar… but really they are two separate things… one for chatting as a person and the other specifically for the wordpress blog itself. Since you can have multiple blogs each one can have a different Blavatar and your Gravatar will remain your personal commenting icon regardless of where you comment.

if you look at the browser tab for this blog on your browser and also to the left of the http address for this blog site up in your browser’s site address box you will see my Blavatar… it just so happens it is the same pic as I used for my Gravatar because I wanted it that way.

  244. LisaInTX says:

I have ZERO faith in our current federal government! Most are CORRUPT and a total disgrace to even be referred to as Americans!
Here is just ONE example of their traitorous and shameless acts!

Barack Obama signed the $680 billion defense authorization bill Wednesday. The bill contains the unrelated provision extending so-called “hate crimes” protections to homosexuals and others with gender-disorientation pathology. The measure had failed on its own for years, so Democrats shamelessly attached it to the must-pass defense bill. That failure is largely due to the fact that it makes certain thoughts a crime. Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) summed it up: “Hate crimes legislation is antithetical to the First Amendment, unnecessary and will have a chilling effect on religious freedom.”

Meanwhile, the defense bill contains provisions far more deleterious to national defense, such as terminating production of the F-22. Of gutting the nation’s air superiority, Obama crowed that he was being fiscally responsible: “When Secretary Gates and I first proposed going after some of these wasteful projects, there were a lot of people who didn’t think it was possible, who were certain we were going to lose, who were certain that we were going to get steamrolled. Today, we have proven them wrong.” He then added, “There’s still more fights that we need to win.” (Like the fight against bad grammar, maybe?)

Obviously, to Democrats, “defense” means pushing aberrant sexual behavior while leaving the nation defenseless.

God I hope not, but I am at a loss how in gods name they think they can bullshit the American public like they are. They must think we are just plain stupid, or they are so detached from reality they feel no fear?????????

  246. LisaInTX says:

My state Rep voted for the MUCH need support for our military and was very dismayed he had to vote yes for this support because it included the SLIMY Hate Crime Bill those a-holes stuck in there!!!
    This is an absolute OUTRAGE!!!!!!!
To have voted No to supporting the hate bill, meant saying NO to supporting our veterans and troops!! Now how the heck is this ETHICAL in any form or any fashion?????

  247. LisaInTX says:

They do not fear us because they have the money to get elected and and if that doesn’t work they have voter fraud to win. This is getting so out of control and I see NO end if things don’t change in this next election. If they don’t I see war coming…..

  248. Kynikos says:

Lisa it has become so crazy, all we are getting is BS propaganda, IE; we created jobs, health care will reduce the budget, the people are for a public option, I am a centrist, I will not send troops into harms way, ALL CRAP, all lies!

I get so fricking PO’ED when I follow this type of lie, and you know what the latest is, reports are coming out, STATING that people have lost hope, there is nothing to look forward to, we will never recover, and that is the first step in the Obama plan, dishearten the people, and then take extraordinary measures to control the fear!!!

    Two words “buy ammo”

  249. LisaInTX says:

You got that right Kink!!! I am not losing heart—I’m just freaking PISSED THE HELL OFF at their unbelievalbe arrogance and nerve….

Tea Partiers push No Big 3 TV 4 Me

    9

The Houston Tea Party Patriots are taking a stand against media bias, and they’re urging every American to stand with them.

The group has just launched NoBig3TV4Me.com, which details the plans to boycott the Big 3 television networks, CBS, ABC and NBC/MSNBC, from Monday, Nov. 9 through Saturday, Nov. 14 – which happens to be in the middle of Nielsen’s Sweeps Weeks.

They’re encouraging participants to not only turn off these stations for the week, but to block any channels that promote the left-wing agenda and contact the companies that advertise on these stations.

For more information on No Big 3 TV 4 Me, click here.
Are you fed up with mainstream media’s half-truths and outright suppression of what is really going on in America?

Are you one of the millions of Americans who attended Tea Parties, Town Halls, the 9/12 March on Washington, or countless other historic and newsworthy events and were willfully ignored or intentionally misrepresented?

You are not alone! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

    TURN ’EM OFF

Take a stand against the BIG 3 TV NETWORKS – CBS, ABC, and NBC/MSNBC – for their distorted, biased, and manipulative media coverage.

Did u guys hear this, WSJ just tweeted the link:

Comcast Corp. and General Electric Co. are wrestling over the value of NBC Universal in negotiations that would give Comcast control of GE’s television and movie company, and an agreement could come within the next three weeks, people familiar with the talks said.

GE and Comcast executives held a series of sessions in New York last week, including presentations from NBC Universal executives on their units, people who attended the meetings said.

Those meetings completed much of the due diligence for a Comcast deal, some of those people said. The Comcast-GE talks could still fall apart.

    and guess who owns Comcast?
    Murdoch!!
    Bwahahahahahaha

people were already commenting on the WSJ page that Olbermann get sacked.

Ah well who knows what to come of it. But if so I will be laughing at liberals who watch msnbc.

    Wall Street Journal – October 25, 2009

CBO UNDERESTIMATES BENEFITS OF MALPRACTICE REFORM

Earlier this month, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said medical-liability reforms could save about $11 billion annually. This assessment is a gross underestimate of the potential benefits of reform and was intended to give cover to congressional Democrats who say malpractice-liability costs are trifling. But a full accounting shows the benefits would be a hefty $242 billion a year, more than 10 percent of America’s health expenditures. Last year alone, damage awards for medical-malpractice claims reached $5.9 billion. Adding in legal costs, underwriting costs, and administrative expenses, total med-mal tort costs were nearly three times higher — $16 billion. From 1986 through 2002, the average insurance payment for a malpractice claim more than tripled to $320,000. The average jury award for medical liability was $637,134 in 2006.
